The genus Atriplex provides species that are used as food and natural remedies. In this work, the levels of soluble phenolic acids (free and conjugated) and flavonoids in extracts from roots, stems, leaves and flowers of the unexplored Atriplex sagittata Borkh were investigated by LC-ESI-MS/MS, together with their antioxidant and antihyaluronidase activity. Phenolic acids were present in all parts of A. sagittata; and were most abundant in the leaves (225.24 μg/g dw.), whereas the highest content of flavonoids were found in the flowers (242.71 μg/g dw.). The most common phenolics were 4-hydroxybenzoic and salicylic acids, kaempferol-3-glucoside-7-rhamnoside, kaempferol-3-rutinoside and the rare narcissoside, which was present in almost all morphotic parts. The stem extract had the highest antioxidant activity and total phenolic content (611.86 mg/100 g dw.), whereas flower extract exerted the most potent antihyaluronidase effect (IC50 = 84.67 µg/mL; control—quercetin: IC50 = 514.28 μg/mL). Phytochemical analysis of the flower extract led to the isolation of two triterpene saponins that were shown to be strong hyaluronidase inhibitors (IC50 = 33.77 and 168.15 µg/mL; control—escin: IC50 = 307.38 µg/mL). This is the first report on the presence of phenolics and saponins in A. sagittata. The results suggest that both groups of metabolites may contribute to the overall activity of this plant species.

Atriplex species are prospective natural candidates for possible drug development because of their antioxidant, antibacterial, antiviral, anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, molluscicidal and antifungal properties. These pharmacological actions are associated to the presence of valuable biochemicals such as terpenoids, hydroxyecdysone, flavonoids and phenolics. These plants also have nutritional properties being rich source of proteins, vitamin A, vitamin C, flavonoids and amino acids. The proper utilization of the substances obtained from these plants can enhance the finesse of these abilities. Atriplex species are used as conventional cure of diseases due to their exceptional therapeutic uses. Plants of this genus have been employed by the common folk in several regions of the world to treat diabetes, jaundice, thyroid and liver disorder, snake bite and against infections in digestive, respiratory and urinary tract which indicate the worth of the herbs belonging to the genus Atriplex. These plants are not only medicinally important but are also important to boost economy specifically due to insecticidal properties of some species which make them suitable to be used for insecticidal applications in agriculture. In view of the medicinal and scientific uses along with the bioavailability of precious chemicals of Atriplex species, a comprehensive review is compiled which focuses on the detailed profile of chemicals present, medicinal uses of extracts, pharmacological functions and biological activities of Atriplex species so as to correlate the available data and explore their potential uses in all possible aspects.

Fasciolosis is a widespread parasitosis of farm live-stock in many developing countries. For this reason, it is necessary to search for new substances against parasitic diseases caused by flukes. Indeed, a wide variety of terrestrial plants have been subjected to chemical and pharmacological screening in order to discover their potential for human medicinal use. The molluscicidal and larvicidal activities of Atriplex inflata were tested on Galba truncatula and Fasciola hepatica larval stages infecting this snail in Tunisia. Phytochemical tests were conducted on extracts in order to establish a meaningful relationship with molluscicidal and larvicidal activities. The molluscicidal activity was evaluated by subjecting snails to sample aqueous solutions. Accordingly, hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol and methanol-water (8:2, v-v) were used as extraction solvents. As a result, hexane and ethyl acetate extracts showed potent activity, according to the World Health Organization, giving LC50 = 7.59 mg/L and 6.69 mg/L for hexane extracts of leaves and fruits, respectively. Ethyl acetate extracts gave LC50 = 5.90 mg/L and 7.32 mg/L for leaves and fruits, successively. Molluscicidal activities of powders were less potent on snails, but active according to the World Health Organization. Hexane and ethyl acetate extracts from leaves and fruits gave potent larvicidal activities with a delay rate exceeding 45.50% (45.50- 98.92%). Phytochemical tests showed that these activities may be attributed to the presence of triterpenoids and/or sterols.
