Mining contributes to the life quality of contemporary society, but can generate significant impacts, these being mitigated due to environmental controls adopted. This study aimed to characterize soil physical properties in high-altitude areas affected by bauxite mining, and to edaphic factors responses to restoration techniques used to recover mined areas in Poços de Caldas plateau, MG, Brazil. The experiment used 3 randomized block design involving within 2 treatments (before mining intervention and after environmental recovery), and 4 replicates (N=24). In each treatment, soil samples with deformed structures were determined: granulometry, water-dispersible clay content, flocculation index, particle density, stoniness level, water aggregate stability, and organic matter contend. Soil samples with preserved structures were used to determine soil density and the total volume of pores, macropores, and micropores. Homogenization of stoniness between soil layers as a result of soil mobilization was observed after the mined area recovery. Stoniness decreased in 0.10-0.20 m layer after recovery, but was similar in the 0-0.10 m layer in before and after samples. The recovery techniques restored organic matter levels to pre-mining levels. However, changes in soil, including an increase in soil flocculation degree and a decrease in water-dispersible clays, were still apparent post-recovery. Furthermore, mining operations caused structural changes to the superficial layer of soil, as demonstrated by an increase in soil density and a decrease in total porosity and macroporosity. Decreases in the water stability of aggregates were observed after mining operations.Index terms: Environmental recovery, physical soil quality, soil recovery. RESUMOA mineração contribui para a qualidade de vida da sociedade contemporânea, porém pode gerar impactos significativos, sendo esses mitigados em função dos controles ambientais adotados. Neste trabalho objetivou-se caracterizar as propriedades físicas do solo, mediante a influência de empreendimentos minerários, avaliando as respostas dos atributos edáficos frente às técnicas utilizadas para a recuperação de áreas degradadas pela mineração de bauxita na região do planalto de Poços de Caldas, MG. O delineamento experimental foi concebido com 3 blocos casualizados, com 2 tratamentos (antes da intervenção minerária e depois da recuperação ambiental), e 4 repetições (N=24). Em cada situação, por meio das amostras com estruturas deformadas foram determinados: granulometria, argila dispersa em água, índice de floculação, densidade de partículas, índice de pedregosidade, estabilidade de agregados em água e teor total de matéria orgânica, por meio das amostras com estrutura preservada foram determinadas: densidade do solo, volume total de poros, macroporos e microporos. ResumoO presente trabalho teve como objetivo avaliar: (a) Uso de leguminosas e gramíneas utilizadas na adubação verde; (b) Incorporação de matéria orgânica pela adição de compostos orgânicos e (c) Efeitos da adubação química e calagem na recuperação de áreas degradadas pela mineração de cassiterita na FLONA do Jamari (RO). O experimento foi instalado em dezembro de 1999. O delineamento experimental adotado foi em blocos casualizados com 24 tratamentos no esquema fatorial 6 X 4, constando de seis tipos de coberturas vegetais (Brachiaria humidicula (Braquiária), Cajanus cajan (Feijão guandu), Mucuma aterrima (Mucuna preta), Cajanus cajan (Feijão guandu) + Brachiaria humidicula (Braquiária); Mucuma aterrima (Mucuna preta)+ Brachiaria humidicula (Braquiária) e solo nu e quatro tipos de adubação na cova (NPK 10-10-10; 50% rejeito + 50% composto; 50% rejeito + 50% composto + NPK 10-10-10; 50% rejeito + 50% composto + NPK 10-10-10 + calcário dolomítico). As amostras de solo foram coletadas superficialmente (0-20 cm) para fins de análises químicas e físicas, 15 meses após o plantio, logo após as chuvas. Os resultados foram submetidos à análise de variância (p < 0,05) e, nos casos em que o teste F foi significativo, aplicou-se o teste Tukey para a comparação das médias de seis repetições Apenas nas características químicas foram observadas diferenças significativas entre os tratamentos. As adubações química e orgânica e a calagem contribuíram para essas diferenças, e os tratamentos que receberam calcário proporcionaram como esperado aumento no pH, nos teores de Ca, Mg, na CTC, SB e V% e diminuição no H+Al quando comparados aos demais. Porém, quando se analisa o teor de matéria orgânica e os parâmetros físicos estudados não houve diferenças entre os tratamentos, mesmo naqueles onde a adubação foi intensiva associada ao plantio de adubos verde e a gramíneas indicando que as melhorias nos atributos físicos do solo em áreas de deposição de rejeito deve ocorrer de forma mais lenta.Palavras-chave: solo degradado, fertilidade, leguminosas.Use of green fertilizing in the recovery of soils degraded by mining in the amazon forest Abstract This work had the goal of evaluating (a) The use of legumes and grasses employed in green fertilizing; (b)The incorporation of organic matter through the addition of organic compounds and (c) The effects of chemical fertilizing and lime application in the recovery of areas degraded by tin mining in the Jamari National Forest (RO). Studies addressing the potential of grass roots in improving the structural quality of constructed minesoils are not frequent in the literature, although they are essential for understanding the re-establishment of soil functions in the environment. The objective of this study was to quantify the root attributes of the species Urochloa humidicola, Panicum maximum, and Urochloa brizantha and relate them to the physical properties of a constructed minesoil in reclamation of an area degraded by coal mining. The study was performed in a field experiment in a coal mining area located in southern Brazil. Soil samples were collected, five years after experiment installation, to determine bulk density, macroporosity, distribution of water stable aggregates expressed in different size classes, mean weight diameter of water stable aggregates, and organic carbon content, as well as for chemical characterization. Root sampling was performed by the monolith method to a depth of 0.30 m. Results confirm the hypothesis that the root system of the perennial grasses studied positively contributes to recovery of the constructed minesoil in the 0.00-0.10 m layer after 58 months of revegetation. The higher percentage of large aggregates, higher bulk density, and lower macroporosity in the subsurface indicate the presence of degraded layers, negatively influencing the development of the grass root system. Urochloa brizantha exhibited the largest root matter in the surface layer, influencing the breakdown of the large and cohesive aggregates, transforming them into smaller crumbly aggregates. In the 0.10-0.20 m layer, Urochloa humidicola showed greater volume and root length in relation to other species; nevertheless, changes in soil physical properties were not observed, showing that the time span of the root growth of the species was not sufficient to provide improvements in the subsurface layers.
