Atmospheric science, anaesthesia, and the environment

Abstract: The inhalational anaesthetic agents sevoflurane isoflurane and desflurane have global warming potentials 2-3 orders of magnitude higher than CO 2 .• Nitrous oxide contributes significantly to global warming and ozone depletion.

“…It is often stated that the environmental impact of using sevoflurane is significantly higher than that of propofol . It is acknowledged that desflurane would be a poor choice for airway work and the worst of the anesthetic volatiles with a GHG emission per MAC hour 20 times that of sevoflurane.…”

“…For example, the infection control agenda supports single‐patient use equipment, and a busy operating list may not make it easy to engage in waste segregation and streaming. Furthermore, our academic grounding in physical sciences places us in an ideal position to explain the processes that underlie climate change .…”

“…Whilst the effects of anaesthetic gases on atmosphere have been comprehensively reviewed in detail (Campbell & Pierce 2015), they are summarized here to highlight the areas of concern. Solar energy is essential for life on Earth.…”

“…The GHGs include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, water and all of the halogenated anaesthetic agents in common use (Campbell & Pierce 2015). Since multiple GHGs exist, it is their combined effect that matters; this is evaluated using carbon dioxide equivalents (CO 2 e, kg).…”
