Atmospheric plasma activation and thin film deposition processes for adhesion improvement and corrosion resistance in the automotive industry

Abstract: The latest trends in the automotive industry show a shift towards more lightweight, robust vehicles powered by electric energy. Light weighting can be achieved through the use of carbon‐reinforced composite materials or light metals, such as aluminum, and by using adhesives for bonding instead of rivets and bolts. In this paper, results from the characterization of plasma‐treated polypropylene using water contact angle goniometry, X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and attenuated total reflectance Fourier‐trans… Show more

“…[58][59][60] Similarly, atmospheric plasma jets with HMDSO introduced in the postdischarge are used to locally deposit corrosion-resistant coatings on automotive parts. [61] Besides organosilicon compounds, hydrocarbons are frequently used for plasma polymerization. Most of all, acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) and ethylene (C 2 H 4 ) as unsaturated monomers as well as ethane (C 2 H 6 ) and methane (CH 4 ) as saturated hydrocarbon molecules are of interest for fundamental understanding.…”

“…In addition to roll-to-roll systems, large-area dielectric devices can be designed for treating large-area polymer, such as automotive exterior parts or large plastic sheets used in construction or signage, whether to solve adhesion or corrosion issues [330] . In contrast to this upscaling approach, APPJs can be employed to treat smaller-sized polymer parts.…”
