Atmospheric circulation during heat waves in Eastern Europe

Abstract: This article aims to describe heat waves in Eastern Europe and to determine the synoptic situations which cause them. In this article, a hot day is defined as the one with a maximum temperature above the 95th percentile of all the values in the analysed period, and a heat wave is considered as a sequence of at least 5 such days. In the analysed period and within the investigated area, from 24 (Kaliningrad) to 55 (Kharkiv) heat waves were observed. The longest heat wave was recorded in Moscow in 2010, lasting a… Show more

“…in 1994, 2003, 2006, 2010, 2014 and 2015. As has already been shown in previous studies, their occurrence was associated with much larger anomalies of atmospheric pressure field and air temperature than on average during heat waves (Tomczyk 2016;Tomczyk, Piotrowski, Bednorz 2016;Tomczyk, Półrolniczak, Bednorz 2017;Tomczyk 2017).…”

“…Russo et al (2015) suggest that in the perspective of the next two decades Europe will experience a HW comparable or greater than that from 2010 in Russia. According to Tomczyk (2017) in this year in Moscow, the HW lasted 45 days, and was related to the persistence of a high pressure system over east Europe.…”

“…e implementation of protection tasks should involve not only the reduction of supply of pollutants, but also the reduction of the effect of climate changes on an increase in water temperature in rivers, and as a consequence on the worsening of unfavourable physical and chemical water parameters. In the context of the observed climate warming (Wrzesiński et al 2015, Kolář, 2017, Milošević et al 2017, Tomczyk 2017, it is important to develop solutions for a reduction of their negative effect. Measures with a global range are optimal, e.g.…”
