The objective of the paper was to characterize the occurrence of heat waves in Europe between 1976 and 2015 and to determine circulation conditions causing their occurrence. The heat waves were recognized as a sequence of at least 5 consecutive hot days. The hot day was defined as a day on which daily maximum air temperature was higher than 95th percentile of all the values in the analyzed period. The conducted research showed an increase in the number of heat waves and their duration in the analyzed period. The longest heat wave occurred in 2010, in Moscow, which lasted 45 days. The most intense changes were observed in the eastern and south-eastern regions. The occurrence of heat waves was mainly connected with positive anomalies of atmospheric pressure at sea level, geopotential height of 500 hPa, and temperature on isobaric surface 850 hPa.

The primary objective of the paper was the description of humanbiometeorological conditions during heat waves in Poland in the years 1966-2018. The description is based on the human-biometeorological index Physiologically Equivalent Temperature (PET). The research was based on data obtained from the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management-National Research Institute for 30 stations in Poland. A heat wave was defined as a sequence of at least 3 days with a maximum daily air temperature of >30 C. The research revealed increasingly frequent occurrence of heat waves in the territory of Poland. The highest number of heat waves was recorded in the western and southern regions of the country, and the lowest in coastal stations. In a large majority of stations, the longest heat waves occurred at the turn of July and August 1994 and in the first half of August 2015. In the case of two longest heat waves, human-biometeorological conditions were similar, although they were more strenuous during the heat wave in 1994. During that wave, considerably higher maximum PET values were recorded, but days with strong heat stress and extreme heat stress were also more frequent.

Long-term temperature fluctuations in rivers of the Fore-Sudetic region in Poland

The paper presents an analysis of water temperature fluctuations in four rivers: Nysa Łużycka, Bóbr, Bystrzyca, and Nysa Kłodzka, in south-west Poland (Fore-Sudetic region) in the period 1971–2014. The obtained results show an evident increase in water temperature ranging from 0.15 °C·dec/1 to 0.33 °C·dec/1. Such changes were particularly determined by changes in air temperature. Water temperature increased in two analyzed stations: Zielona Góra and Wrocław by 0.37 and 0.35 °C·dec/1, respectively. While the variability of the rate of warming of particular rivers in the analyzed region should be associated with local factors occurring in the catchments, the contribution of forest cover is of key importance. A change in water temperature constituting its primary parameter will cause further transformation of the discussed river ecosystems. Combined with poor water quality, rising water temperatures can become a factor inhibiting further economic development of the Fore-Sudetic region in Poland.
