Long-term temperature fluctuations in rivers of the Fore-Sudetic region in Poland

Abstract: The paper presents an analysis of water temperature fluctuations in four rivers: Nysa Łużycka, Bóbr, Bystrzyca, and Nysa Kłodzka, in south-west Poland (Fore-Sudetic region) in the period 1971–2014. The obtained results show an evident increase in water temperature ranging from 0.15 °C·dec/1 to 0.33 °C·dec/1. Such changes were particularly determined by changes in air temperature. Water temperature increased in two analyzed stations: Zielona Góra and Wrocław by 0.37 and 0.35 °C·dec/1, respectively. While the va… Show more

“…It should be emphasized that river water temperature is correlated with air temperature [42,43]. The statement was confirmed in three out of four cases analyzed in the paper, where the rate of increase in water temperature and the corresponding air temperatures in the nearest meteorological stations were similar.…”

“…According to the forecasts, the greatest increases in river water temperature will occur among others in Europe, where earlier research revealed its increase in a range of 1-3 °C (Arora et al, 2016;Basarin et al, 2016;Pekarova et al, 2008). The tendency for an increase in water temperature was also confirmed in the case of rivers in Poland, where the issues of thermal conditions of rivers represent an important trend of hydrological research (Graf, 2019;Graf and Wrzesiński, 2020;Łaszewski, 2020;Ptak, 2018).…”

“…DLink.max . 100% at a level of 66%, and for the purpose of designation of subgroups, a threshold value at a level of 25% was adopted (Ptak et al, 2018). The cluster analysis was conducted based on results obtained from the Sen analysis, presented the magnitude of changes in mean monthly water and air temperatures in particular stations.…”

“…Such a situation will certainly force undertaking corrective measures reducing the effects of global warming for the functioning of lake ecosystems. Such measures are only performed in the case of rivers (Ptak 2018. Each expansion of knowledge in the scope of the thermal regime of lakes and its changes may contribute to the determination of the directions and scope of measures allowing for limiting the effect of climate change in the context of the functioning of lakes.…”
