Atlas of the rare vascular plants of Ontario

Abstract: as soon as possible it is being issued in fascicles that may be held in a looseleaf binder. This mode of publication has the advantage of permitting us to update maps and to add species as more information becomes known. We hope that the atlas will help in planning the re-exploration of known rare plant localities and that it will help in the recognition of unique areas that are characterized by concentrations of rare plants. The mapping of specimens by date of collection, furthermore, gives some idea of the p… Show more

“…gonquin, and the flora has affinities to the Atlantic coastal plain of eastern North America. The open sandy shores of Axe Lake support species such as: Rhexia virginica, Xyris caroliniana, ]uncus militaris, Nymphoides cordata, Muhlenbergia uniflora, and Rhynchospora capitellata, which are considered rare in Ontario (Argus and White 1977). These and other species are largely restricted to the Georgian Bay area of Ontario (Keddy and Reznicek 1982), with other disjunct concentrations on the southern end of Lake Michigan (Peattie 1922) and the sand barrens of northwestern Wisconsin (McLaughlin 1932).…”

“…As such, they are often the focus of conservation efforts, even though the species they represent may be quite common towards the range centre (Hunter & Hutchinson 1994). For example, about one-third of the rare vascular plants species of Ontario, Canada occur as disjunct populations (Argus et al . 1987) .…”

“…Absence of a value indicates that the species was not prevalent in the type, although it may have been present. An asterisk indicates that the species is on the rare and endangered list for Ontario(Argus and White 1977). DMs, drymesic sandy; Msl, mesic sandy loam; WMsl, wet-mesic sandy loam; Wl, wet loam.…”
