Introduction: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) negatively affects the physical and biopsychosocial aspects of the lives of individuals with the disease, thereby affecting the quality of life (QOL) of patients and their families. Objectives: This study aimed to measure the QOL of individuals with CKD and compare the QOL scores of patients with CKD to the scores of disease-free individuals to find factors associated with better QOL. Method: The local Ethics Committee approved this cross-sectional study. The study was carried out at a public clinic and a private hemodialysis clinic. Participants were asked to answer the WHOQOL-BREF and a sociodemographic questionnaire. Statistical tests were used according to the variables of interest and significance was attributed to differences with p-values < 0.05. Results: Nearly two thirds (59%) of the case group members were males and 55% did not have a spouse; 53% were seen at a private clinic and 57% had complications. The variables that more significantly affected QOL were smoking (perception of QOL) (Bi = - 0.4061; p = 0.032), undergoing hemodialysis (general health status) (Bi = - 0.3029; p = 0.034), and duration of sessions (Bi = 0.117; p = 0.039) (environmental domain). Conclusion: The QOL of patients with CKD was significantly lower when compared to controls in the physical and psychological domains. Several variables affected the perception of QOL and should be considered in clinical assessment.

Resumo: A insuficiência renal crônica é um problema da saúde pública e a hemodiálise é um tratamento invasivo e desgastante, do qual os pacientes relatam sentimentos de impotência e dependência. A pesquisa teve como objetivos propor atividades lúdicas e relaxamento durante sessões de hemodiálise e investigar opinião dos pacientes sobre o trabalho, bem como conhecer vivências e percepções quanto à doença e tratamento. Método: Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa realizada em um hospital geral da região da Baixada Santista -litoral sul de São Paulo -com grupos de pacientes durante as sessões de hemodiálise, na qual se realizaram atividades lúdicas, relaxamento e visualização, entrevista em profundidade e aplicação de escala Likert. As entrevistas foram categorizadas pelo método de análise de conteúdo do tipo temática. Resultados: Foram realizados quatro grupos envolvendo um total de 13 participantes, com idades entre 20 e 70 anos, de ambos os sexos, com tempo de hemodiálise que variou de um mês a dois anos. Conclusão: Relato dos participantes sobre as atividades propostas indicam que houve melhora relativa do humor e que elas contribuíram para melhor enfrentamento da situação de imobilidade e ociosidade durante as sessões de hemodiálise, além de permitirem a expressão de necessidades subjetivas singulares. Ludic Activities to Improve Psychological Well-Being with Patients in HemodialysisAbstract: Chronic renal failure is a public health problem and hemodialysis is considered an invasive and exhausting long-term process. Patients usually report feelings of helplessness and dependence, and ludic activities might provide involvement, joy and pleasure. Objectives: To propose ludic activities, to investigate patients' opinions about these activities, and to understand patients' experience regarding disease and treatment. Method: This was a qualitative study conducted in a general hospital in the metropolitan area of Santos, Brazil, with groups of patients during hemodialysis sessions, where ludic activities, relaxation and visualization, in-depth interviews and application of a Likert scale were performed. The speeches were categorized by the method of content thematic analysis. Results: We had four groups involving 13 participants, aged between 20 and 70 years, of both sexes. Conclusion: The proposed activity is a positive factor for mood improvement and contributed to better cope with the situation of immobility and idleness, mobilizing objectively and subjectively, and in addition, allowing the expression of emotions in a constructive way, revealing patients' unique needs and idiosyncrasies.

anos (DP=15,7 anos), com média de tempo de tratamento de 47,9 meses (DP= 47,5 meses), a maioria em primeiro tratamento de substituição renal (83,6%). Não houve diferença entre as médias de concentração do cortisol salivar dos sujeitos do estudo nos dois momentos (dias 1 e 2) e nas duas fases do dia de intervenção (antes e após intervenção), nos três turnos de HD. O primeiro e segundo turnos de HD apresentaram curva gráfica do cortisol com subida acentuada ao final da hemodiálise, enquanto no terceiro turno a curva apresentou-se em discreto declínio do início até o término da sessão de HD. Apesar de a maioria dos sujeitos ter apresentado baixo nível de ansiedade, em todas as fases do estudo, verificou-se diferença significativa (p<0,001) entre as médias de ansiedade nas fases pré e pós intervenção. Não se observou diferença estatística para as variáveis frequência cardíaca, frequência respiratória, temperatura e pressão arterial sistólica entre os momentos pré e pós intervenção. A pressão arterial diastólica apresentou diferença entre as médias dos momentos pré e pós intervenção (p=0,0006). Foi verificado presença de correlação entre o cortisol plasmático e o cortisol salivar (r = 0,722 e p < 0,0001), além disso, observou-se presença de ritmo circadiano do cortisol em 85,4% dos participantes do estudo. Os participantes mostraram boa aceitação da intervenção com música. Conclui-se que nas variáveis sinais vitais e cortisol não se observou diferença com a intervenção empregada, entretanto, pelos escores do IDATE, foi evidenciado um efeito redutor da ansiedade por meio da música, nos três turnos de HD, o que reforça o uso desta intervenção. The objective in this quasi-experimental study was to assess the effect of music as complementary therapy on stress expression variables in chronic renal patients during hemodialysis treatment. As specific objectives, the study aimed to compare the physiological variables (salivary cortisol, cardiac frequency, arterial pressure, respiratory frequency and cutaneous temperature) and anxiety scores measured using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) at two moments (day 1: observation of baseline; day 2: observation before and after the intervention). Other complementary objectives were: evaluation of the presence of circadian rhythm of cortisol, correspondence between salivary and plasmatic cortisol and assessment of the acceptance of the intervention. The manipulation variable was the hearing of the music selection the subjects preferred during 30 minutes. The study was undertaken at two distinct moments: first, the profile of the variables of interest was determined in a standard hemodialysis procedure, without intervention; second, the effect of a music intervention on the profile of the variables of interest was observed in a standard hemodialysis procedure.
