The tomato (Lycopersicon spp.) productivity is severely reduced by attack of several insects and microorganisms. It is economically one of the most important crops that has been extensively cultivated in the Americas. Therefore, assays were performed in the greenhouse and the laboratory to evaluate the possible interaction between resistant tomato genotypes and plant extracts on the control of the pest Bemisia tabaci Gennadius (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae) biotype B. This evaluation was performed for genotypes IAC-Santa Clara, PI-134417, LA-716, PI-134418, and PI-127826, and aqueous extracts from seeds of Azadirachta indica A. de Jussieu (Rutales: Meliaceae), branches and leaves of Trichilia pallida Swartz (Rutales: Meliaceae). In the greenhouse, spraying with extracts from seeds of A. indica, and leaves and branches of T. pallida reduced whitefly attraction with IAC-Santa Clara; on PI-134417, LA-716, PI-134418, and PI-127826 the extracts did not affect the attractiveness to the B. tabaci biotype B. Extracts from A. indica seeds and T. pallida leaves and branches reduced oviposition on IAC-Santa Clara; extracts from T. pallida branches reduced oviposition on PI-134417, PI-134418, and PI-127826, while the extract from A. indica seeds reduced oviposition in PI-127826. The extracts did not affect oviposition on LA-716. In the laboratory, the extracts increased the mortality of nymphs on the genotypes. The "genotype × extract" interaction was significant, indicating an addictive effect between resistant genotypes and plant extracts on whitefly control.

-The effects of the neem seed oil aqueous solutions on survival and performance of egg, larva and adult stage of the Coccinelid predator Cycloneda sanguinea (L.) were evaluated under laboratory conditions. In a first trial, eggs and 2 nd -instar larvae were sprayed with the neem solutions at 0; 0.5 and 2.25 ml/l and kept at 25 ± 1 o C, 70% RH and 14h photoperiod. Egg viability and duration and larvae and pupae survival were evaluated as well as the predatory capacity of the larvae, adult longevity and reproduction. Egg spraying did not affect egg hatch or larvae survival and development. When the larvae were sprayed, significant mortality was observed only at the higher concentration (P < _ 0.05) and larval development and predatory capacity were not affected. Also, adults originated from treated larvae showed no alterations on sex rate, fecundity, fertility and longevity, thus indicating that at the tested concentrations the neem oil do not reduce the reproductive potential of the species. In a second experiment, adults collected in the field were sprayed with neem oil or kept on Parthenium sp. twigs sprayed with the neem oil aqueous solution at 5 ml/l, to evaluate survival. The neem oil at this concentration caused no mortality to the adults, since all of them, sprayed or kept on sprayed twigs, presented a longevity curve similar to untreated ones. The results indicate that the neem oil presents potential to be used in association with biological control of pests, when C. sanguinea is present. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: Meliaceae, biological control, botanical insecticide, predator, ladybird, Parthenium RESUMO -Os efeitos de soluções aquosas do óleo de sementes de nim sobre o predador Cycloneda sanguinea (L.), nos estágios de ovo, larva e adulto, foram avaliados em laboratório. Em um primeiro experimento, ovos e larvas de 2 o ínstar foram pulverizados com as soluções de nim nas concentrações de 0; 0, 5 e 2,25 ml/l de água apresentaram mortalidade significativa (P < _ 0,05) somente na maior concentração e o desenvolvimento larval e a capacidade predatória não foram afetados. Os adultos originados de larvas tratadas não apresentaram alterações da razão sexual, fecundidade, fertilidade e longevidade, indicando que nas concentrações testadas o óleo de nim não reduz o potencial reprodutivo da espécie. Em um segundo experimento, adultos da joaninha coletados no campo foram pulverizados com a solução aquosa de óleo de nim ou mantidos sobre ramos de losna-branca pulverizados na concentração de 5 ml/l de água, para avaliação da sobrevivência. A pulverização do óleo de nim nesta concentração não causou mortalidade nos adultos de C. sanguinea, uma vez que os insetos de ambos tratamentos apresentaram curva de longevidade semelhante à da testemunha. Os resultados demonstram que o nim apresenta potencial para ser utilizado em associação com o controle biológico de pragas, quando C. sanguinea for empregada.

-Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) is one of the most important tomato pests in Brazil and causes severe losses due to the sap suction, the induction of the irregular ripening of the fruit and virus transmission. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of exudates released by the glandular trichomes on the development of B. tabaci biotype B on eight tomato genotypes, under greenhouse conditions. The experiment was arranged as a factorial scheme (genotype x exudate) in a randomized block design, with three replications, being the genotypes evaluated in two conditions (with and without exudate). Whitefly adults were transferred to a voile cage for 24h. The variables evaluated were number of eggs and viability, incubation period, number of nymphs, duration and viability of the nymphal stage. Trichome counts and determination of pH and acylglucose content were made for all the genotypes. Intact leaflets of LA716 were less accepted for oviposition than leaflets without exudate, which suggests an antixenotic effect. Antixenotic resistance in LA1739 and PI134417 was not associated to the glandular exudate. The effect of exudates on the insect oviposition was explained by the acylglucose content. The pH showed secondary role on the whitefly oviposition. Trichomes density improved the insect development. LA1584 reduced the insect survival and increased its cycle, besides promoting an intermediate oviposition. For this reason, it can be useful in breeding programs. However, further studies are needed to determine the potential of this genotype and hybrids for future utilization in integrated pest management.KEY WORDS: Lycopersicon, silverleaf whitefly, Bemisia argentifolii RESUMO -Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) é uma das principais pragas do tomateiro no Brasil, provocando severas perdas devido à sucção de seiva, indução do amadurecimento irregular dos frutos e transmissão de viroses. O objetivo deste trabalho foi determinar o efeito de tricomas glandulares no desenvolvimento de B. tabaci biótipo B em oito genótipos de tomateiro, em casa de vegetação. Utilizou-se o delineamento de blocos ao acaso, em arranjo fatorial (genótipo x exsudato), com três repetições, sendo os genótipos avaliados na condição com e sem exsudato. Adultos da mosca-branca foram transferidos para uma gaiola de voil, onde permaneceram durante 24h. As variáveis avaliadas foram número de ovos e viabilidade, período de incubação, número de ninfas, duração e sobrevivência da fase ninfal. Efetuouse a contagem de tricomas e a determinação do pH e teor de acilglicose para todos os genótipos. Na presença de exsudato, LA716 proporcionou redução na oviposição do inseto, o que sugere efeito antixenótico. Resistência antixenótica em LA1739 e PI134417 não foi associada ao exsudato glandular. O efeito do exsudato na oviposição do inseto foi explicado pelo teor de acilglicose. O pH apresentou papel secundário na oviposição da mosca-branca.
