In the search for the reduction of the side effects caused by allopathy, phytotherapeutic products are already on the veterinary market. This study aimed was to evaluate Elevated Plus-Maze and Hole Board test as an analytical methodology for quality control of anxiolytic medicines based on Passiflora incarnata. The efficacy of three brands commercial differents of Passiflora incarnata extracts was tested in the Elevated Plus-maze (for anxiolytic effect) and the Hole Board test (for locomotor and neophilia activity) in Wistar rats. Treatment with the P. incarnata brands revealed a significant 3-fold increase in the length of stay in the open arms in the LCE. In the ambulation, animals from bands 1 and 3 presented a significant increase, being brand 2 the only one that did not present this relevance. In the neophilia, Passiflora brand 1 presented a significant increase of 3 times and groups 2 and 3 an increase of approximately 2 times. The results showed that different brands of Passiflora have a satisfactory quality standard related to biological activity and showed that the use of Elevated plus-maze/Hole board test can be an effective tool in the quality control of herbal medicines with anxiolytic activity associated with the phytochemical analysis.

O objetivo deste estudo tem como tema “Possibilidades de utilização da Passiflora do ponto de vista fitoquímico e farmacológico”. Realizar uma pesquisa histórica do uso desta espécie vegetal, investigar e descrever as finalidades e indicações de seu uso como farmacoterapia, e fornecer orientações sobre as possíveis consequências associadas ao seu uso ou uso indevido, levando em consideração os efeitos adversos e toxicológicos relatados. efeitos. Dentre essas propriedades e utilizações, encontram-se efeitos ansiolíticos, sedativos e antiespasmódicos. Seus efeitos foram obtidos através do extrato de metabólitos secundários encontrados em diversas partes da planta como raízes, casca, caule, folhas e flores. A pesquisa aqui apresentada prioriza a descoberta de conhecimentos essenciais sobre os usos da Passiflora incarnata, e com isso assume grande importância e complexidade, por se tratar de uma espécie de Passiflora que não é cultivada no Brasil e possui amplo espectro de atividade farmacológica.

Background: Passiflora L. is a genus belonging to the Passifloraceae family, with many species widely used in folk medicine and several pharmacological activities described in the scientific literature, being a major target for the development of new therapeutic products. Studies have identified several bioactive compounds in their composition as responsible for these activities, mainly C-glycoside flavonoids. Objective: The aim of this study was carry out a review of patents related to the genus and its application in several pharmacological activities, important for the development of new drugs and formulations. Method: The search was carried out in 5 specialized databases, INPI, EPO, WIPO, Latipat and Derwent, using the term ‘Passiflora’ combined with ‘A61K and A61P', subclasses of the section A, of the International Patent Classification (IPC), which are destined to medical, dental or hygienic purposes, and therapeutic activity of chemical compounds or medicinal preparation, respectively. Results: 1,198 patents, citing the genus in the title or abstract, have been found, 508 being duplicates. After exclusion and inclusion criteria, 23 patents written in English, Portuguese and Spanish were selected, which demonstrated biological assays in vivo with species of Passiflora as the only active constituent or incorporated in formulations with other compounds. Conclusion: The findings of this search showed growing interest in research and industrial areas, in the pharmaceutical development with species of Passiflora, suggesting that the different bioactive compounds present in the genus can be considered as an important tool for the development of new effective and safe products with pharmacological potential.
