Athletic injury to the first metatarsal phalangeal joint

Abstract: The introduction of artificial turf resulted in a rapid rise in hyperextension injuries to the great toe metatarsophalangeal joint. This injury has been noted in the participants of a number of sports. The injury to the plantar structures of the joint can result in pain with extension and difficulty with continued participation.
