Asymptomatic metastasis to cricoid from prostate carcinoma: an incidental finding detected on 18F-choline PET/CT

Abstract: Metastases to the larynx from prostate carcinoma are rare. We describe a case of asymptomatic prostate carcinoma metastasis to the right cricoid cartilage detected on 18F-fluorocholine PET/CT. This was histologically proven on open biopsy and the patient was offered local radiotherapy.

“…Other malignancies where FDG PET-CT was able to detect thyroid cartilage metastases were lung and prostate. [45] One solitary case report described cricoid cartilage metastasis from prostate carcinoma on 18 F Fluorocholine PET-CT.[6] Through this case, the authors reiterate the fact that 18 F FDG PET-CT can be helpful in determining the rare sites of metastasis with ease.…”

“…[ 6 ] Few cases have been described in literature previously of metastasis to cartilages of larynx. [ 8 9 10 11 12 ] The laryngeal metastases usually remain unnoticed and may or may not present with clinical symptoms. The same was seen in our series and none of the patient had any thyroid cartilage involvement symptoms and since multiple metastases were seen, the histopathological confirmation of the thyroid cartilage lesions was not done.…”

“…Then they merge to form visible focal tumor nodules, and further growth causes destruction of the laminas, and subsequently, the tumor extension is seen into perilaryngeal soft tissue. Different PET/CT scan tracers like FDG PET/CT scan, PSMA PET/CT scan,[ 7 ] 18 Flurcholine PET/CT scans[ 8 ] and 18 F-Choline and 64 Cu-PSMA PET/CT[ 9 ] scans have been reported to be useful to detect thyroid cartilage metastases. Thus, a review of the literature and our case series describes that fused imaging PET/CT scans can detect these rare sites of metastases.…”
