Associations of common mental disorder with alcohol use in the adult general population: a systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Background and Aims Research has shown that alcohol use and common mental disorders (CMDs) co‐occur; however, little is known about how the global prevalence of alcohol use compares across different CMDs. We aimed to (i) report global associations of alcohol use (alcohol use disorder (AUD), binge drinking and consumption) comparing those with and without a CMD, (ii) examine how this differed among those with and without specific types of CMDs and (iii) examine how results may differ by study characteristics. M… Show more

“…In another study, anxiety and depression have been associated with 1.5 times more probability to alcohol abuse and 2.5 times to alcohol dependence 18 . A similar study found the same results in addition to the finding of PTSD to be related to two times higher probability of alcohol use disorder incidence 20 . Also, there is evidence of the association between increasing alcohol use and the worsening of mental health 21 .…”

“…The link between mental health problems (particularly anxiety and depression) and alcohol use, though complicated, has been well established outside the postnatal period [33][34][35] . Several studies have also examined correlates of postpartum depression, with alcohol use in pregnancy being cited as a contributing factor [21] ; however, research on the reverse association (i.e., whether anxiety and/or depression are risk factors for postpartum alcohol use) is scarce.…”

“…Alcohol, tobacco, and coffee are the most commonly used substances in the general population, and consumption is often initiated during adolescence 1,2 . Previous research has indicated a link between use of these substances and mood disorders, though alcohol and tobacco have been subject to more investigations than coffee 3–9 . Epidemiological prospective associations have been mostly studied for major depression (MD), 3,7 while bipolar disorder (BP), which is characterized by manic or hypomanic episodes and is often chronic, is far less studied 6 .…”
