Associations between physical activity and health-related fitness – volume versus pattern

Abstract: Approximately 3.2 million people die of non-communicable diseases (NCD) each year due to insufficient physical activity. Physical activity guidelines are possibly perceived as too demanding and might thus pose a barrier. We addressed the question if a more stable physical activity pattern is associated with higher levels of health-related fitness than one with high and low intensities, regardless of the physical activity level (PAL). Physical activity was objectively measured in 296 men and women (53.7 ± 8.94 … Show more

“…The result of the study is in line with the result of the study conducted by Knaeps et al, (2017)who studied 296 participants (male and female) to examine the relationship between physical activity, measured by SenseWear Pro Armband, and physical fitness, measured by fitness index. The result of the study shows that the more active a person in doing physical activity, the higher the physical fitness they have.…”

“…The results showedthat there were no significant differences between the inactive group and active group in relation to their BMI, body fat percentage, hip-to-waist ratio, waist circumference, and VO2max. On the other hand, several studiesfound different results, such as the results of the study conducted by Knaeps et al, (2017) that found that as long as the intensity of physical activity is high, health-related fitness will also be high.…”

“…Relevant studies indicate that physical inactivity is not only an independent risk factor for chronic diseases such as hypertension (4), heart disease (5) and 2 diabetes mellitus (6), but also has a serious negative impact on physical fitness, which leads to massive social issues (7). Globally, 80% of adolescents are lacking in physical activity; "low physical activity-high sedentary time" has become a widely-used descriptor of current physical inactivity among adolescents (8)(9)(10). The latest WHO guidelines recommend that children and adolescents should engage in an average of 60 min per day of moderate to high intensity exercise (mainly aerobic exercise), and limit sedentary time, especially screen time (11).…”

“…Every provincial office of education, including the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, endeavors to improve the health of students with PAPS scores between the 4 and 5 ranges. A number of studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of health-related physical fitness classes, in both addressing the problem once it arises, and preventing the problem from emerging [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ]. Kim (2002) demonstrated that students with poor HrPF scores voluntarily and actively participated in the sports they were interested in, and showed a desire to continue to participate in the exercise programs [ 25 ].…”
