Associations between a Mediterranean diet pattern and inflammatory biomarkers in European adolescents

Abstract: Some specific food-inflammation associations were found, suggesting that diet is to a certain extent already related to inflammation in adolescents and can be used in disease prevention. Also some counterintuitive results were found, which might be due to grouping very different foods into a single group, besides considering that the human body may respond differently depending on the interaction between diet, lifestyle, genetics, biochemical individuality, age and sex.

“…Dietary patterns may influence the risk of diseases through the effects of CRP, a marker of subclinical inflammation and predictor of cardiovascular disease [ 4 ]. Several epidemiological studies [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 ] and clinical trials [ 1 , 11 ] have described an inverse relationship between adherence to Mediterranean diet and CRP concentration. Most of the studies assess adherence to the Mediterranean diet through the FFQs.…”

“…The association between adherence to a Mediterranean diet and levels of CRP, as a marker of subclinical inflammation, has been previously investigated [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 ]. In all these studies, food consumption and adherence to the Mediterranean diet was determined by food frequency questionnaires (FFQ) or by self-administered 24 h recall, both time-consuming methods.…”

“…The food groups included in the Mediterranean diet pyramid have health benefits and there is now scientific evidence for their role in preventing chronic diseases . However, the proposed model for the sustainability of foods could be applied to all foods in any geographic area of the world following the guidelines for a healthy diet indicated by national authorities and international agencies.…”

“…Nevertheless, we should keep in mind that a small number of adolescents reached the vegetable recommendations, an intake of 300-450 g/day. In fact, the mean vegetable intake of the HELENA sample was 98 g/day [35] and those with high adherence to the vegetables intake according to the MDS-A presented mean intakes of 106.4 g/day (Supp1).…”
