Alterations in circulating Cu and Zn are negative predictors of survival in neoplastic patients and are known during lung cancer. However, no data on predicting mortality of lung cancer patients based on the level of these elements in the blood have been presented to date. The aims of this prospective cohort study were as follows: (i) To evaluate the disturbances in serum and whole blood Cu and Zn, (ii) to assess the relationships between serum and whole blood Cu and Zn status and clinical, sociodemographic, and nutritional data, and (iii) to investigate the association of Cu and Zn status with all-cause mortality in lung cancer. Naïve-treatment lung cancer patients (n = 167) were characterized in terms of sociodemographic, clinical, and anthropometric data and dietary intake and compared with sex-matched control subjects (n = 48). Whole blood and serum Cu and Zn status was determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. Cox proportional hazards models adjusted for multiple confounders/mediators were used to estimate the association between all-cause death and Cu and Zn status. Sex, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, clinical stage, and hemoglobin, platelet, and glucose concentrations significantly differentiated Cu and Zn status. All-cause mortality in lung cancer patients was positively associated with serum Cu levels, Cu:Zn ratio, and whole blood Zn levels. However, an advanced clinical stage of disease was the strongest predictor of all-cause mortality. Circulatory status of Cu and Zn might be included in routine clinical characteristics of patients with lung cancer patients as additional prognostic variables, but only after further more detail studies.

Background The healing process of burns includes coagulation, inflammation, and remodeling. Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is involved throughout this healing process. Stem cells from the platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with stromal vascular fraction (SVF) can increase concentrations of growth factors, including VEGF. This is expected to accelerate burn healing. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of a combination of PRP and SVF on VEGF levels in a rats model of deep dermal burn wound healing. Materials and methods This is an experimental research study in rats using a post-test control group design with 4 groups: A) control, B) Vaseline, C) topical PRP and SVF, and D) PRP and SVF injection. Burn wounds were induced according to the modified Guo method. Results In a rats model of deep dermal wound healing, topical Vaseline significantly increased serum VEGF compared to control. Topical application and injection of stem cells also significantly increased serum VEGF compared to control and Vaseline. The VEGF concentration was significantly higher following injection of PRP and SVF, suggesting that the injection route is more effective at increasing VEGF levels compared to the topical application of stem cells. Conclusion The combination of PRP and SVF, either by injection or topical application, can increase VEGF levels during the healing process from deep dermal burns.

Introduction Tumors most often develop due to inflammatory factors, including inflammatory cells that produce cytokines and cytotoxic mediators that can stimulate malignant transformation. Knowing that interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) factor into the development of colorectal cancer (CRC), we aimed to assess IL-6 and CRP's relationship with the stage and differentiation of CRC. Methods In a sample of 46 patients with CRC, as confirmed by histopathological examination, plasma levels of IL-6 and CRP were measured from peripheral venous blood samples before surgery and examined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results Most patients were male (63.0%) and at least 50 years old (73.9%). A positive correlation emerged between stage of CRC and both plasma IL-6 ( r = 0.396, p = .003) and CRP ( r = 0.376, p = .005) levels, which the Kruskal–Wallis test indicated were highest in stage IV (IL-6: median = 25.80, p = .019; CRP: median = 34.10, p = .040). Plasma IL-6 levels (median = 25.80, p = .019) were higher in well-differentiated CRC, whereas plasma CRP levels (median = 34.10, p = .040] were higher in poorly differentiated tissue. Linear plotting revealed a linear relationship between plasma IL-6 and plasma CRP levels in patients with CRC. Conclusion Because the stage of CRC significantly correlates with plasma IL-6 and CRP levels, IL-6 and CRP can serve as diagnostic factors in assessing the progress and prognosis of CRC.
