Association of Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss With Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency

Abstract: Patients with VBI appear to be at increased risk of developing SSNHL. Further research is needed to investigate the association among the severity of VBI, the risk of SSNHL, and the pattern of the audiometric curve.

“…Specifically, some manuscripts report a significant association between hypertension, renal disease, hyperlipidemia, diabetes and ISSNHL. (3,4,6) However, other papers from the same database did not reproduce one more of these significant associations. (4,12,18) Reasons for inconsistencies in database studies are myriad, but can include heterogeneous data preparation, coding, sampling and/or statistical methodologies.…”

“…Indeed, evidence exists for associations between ISSNHL with primary cardiovascular disease and risk factors such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, renal disease, and iron deficiency anemia. (24,69,12) Other investigators have linked high GP-IIIa platelet concentration, fibrinogen concentration, and genetic mutations (i.e. phosphodiesterase 4D gene polymorphisms) that predispose to thromboembolic events as risk factors for ISSNHL.…”

“…However, the etiology and pathogenesis of SSNHL are still unclear. Current studies suggest that viral infections [2], autoimmune diseases [3], inflammatory lesions, tumors [5], trauma [6] and vascular diseases [7] are associated with SSNHL. In addition, the currently more recognized possible pathogenesis of SSNHL focuses on the inner ear vascular spasm, vascular striatum dysfunction, vascular embolism or thrombosis, hydrocephalus membranous labyrinth and hair cell damage.…”

“…In addition, the currently more recognized possible pathogenesis of SSNHL focuses on the inner ear vascular spasm, vascular striatum dysfunction, vascular embolism or thrombosis, hydrocephalus membranous labyrinth and hair cell damage. Among them, more and more evidence points to a tight relationship between dyslipidemia and SSNHL [7].…”
