Association of serum uric acid, homocystine and ferritin among amyotrophic lateral sclerosis patients

Abstract: Background: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) disease which is also known as motor neuron disease (MND) or Lou Gehrig's disease, is causes the death of neurons controlling voluntary muscles. There may have association of serum uric acid, homocystine and ferritin with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. But we have not enough data regarding these issues. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association of serum uric acid, homocystine and ferritin with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Methods: It was a case-contr… Show more

“…Serum UA has been proposed to be a biomarker of ALS progression (especially in the early phases) [92], and there is accumulating evidence demonstrating that serum UA levels correlate with ALS progression as measured by the ALS Functional Rating Scale-Revised (ALSFRS-R) [93,94]. Meta-analyses also support an inverse association of serum UA levels with risk of death among ALS patients [95].…”
