Association of serum omentin-1 concentrations with the presence and severity of preeclampsia

Abstract: Background: Inflammation is involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. Omentin is a newly discovered adipokine that possesses an anti-inflammatory function. The aim of this study was to determine the association of serum omentin-1 concentration with the presence and severity of preeclampsia. Methods: Serum concentrations of omentin-1 were measured in 128 women with preeclampsia and 96 women with uncomplicated pregnancies using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay method. Results: Patients with preeclampsia … Show more

“…Some studies reported that in women who develop preeclampsia maternal HOMA-IR is increased and this increase precedes the clinical onset of the disease and it may be apparent from the first trimester of pregnancy. 712 However, several other studies found no significant differences in HOMA-IR between preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic groups in the first, second or third trimesters of pregnancy or at the time of delivery. 1319…”

“…Some studies reported that in women who develop preeclampsia maternal HOMA-IR is increased and this increase precedes the clinical onset of the disease and it may be apparent from the first trimester of pregnancy. [7][8][9][10][11][12] However, several other studies found no significant differences in HOMA-IR between preeclamptic and non-preeclamptic groups in the first, second or third trimesters of pregnancy or at the time of delivery. [13][14][15][16][17][18][19] Preeclampsia has a complex pathophysiology and the primary cause is thought to be impaired placentation leading to placental hypoxia and oxidative stress with consequent release of anti-angiogenic factors, such as soluble fms-like tyrosine kinase 1 (sFlt-1) and soluble endoglin (sENG), into the maternal circulation, which in turn lead to endothelial dysfunction and multisystem organ injury.…”

“…We report that 25(OH)D concentrations were positively associated with HMW‐adiponectin, but not with IL‐6, MCP‐1, omentin‐1, or visfatin after adjustment for maternal factors. Inflammation and adipose tissue failure (characterized by altered adipokine concentrations), have been implicated in the pathophysiology of GDM , PTB , and preeclampsia . Studies show that omentin‐1 has insulin‐sensitizing effects , while visfatin activates the insulin receptor and MCP‐1 deficiency ameliorates insulin resistance .…”

“…Several publications describing omentin in association with pregnancy have been published [ 37 39 ]. However, we have found only one article analyzing omentin-1 in relation to preterm birth.…”
