Association of Serum Bisphenol-A Concentration and Male Reproductive Function Among Exposed Workers

Abstract: Bisphenol-A (BPA) can alter endocrine function in animals, yet the relationship between human exposure to BPA and male reproductive function is not well understood. We collected serum samples from 281 male workers exposed to BPA and 278 controls. Serum BPA concentrations were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after derivatization. The serum levels of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) and total testosterone (TT) were detected by radioimmunoassay and levels of inhibin B (INB) and androstenedione… Show more

“…Furthermore, male workers in the highest quartile of BPA measurements had lower inhibin B levels (Liu et al, 2015). Nonetheless, no such correlation between BPA and inhibin B was observed among male partners of pregnant women (Mendiola A c c e p t e d m a n u s c r i p t et al, 2010) or in Chinese male workers exposed or not exposed to BPA in factories (Zhuang et al, 2015).…”

“…Occupational exposure to BPA has been studied largely among manufacturing workers in Asia (Hanaoka et al , 2002; Xiao et al , 2005; Cha et al , 2008; He et al , 2009; Ren et al , 2012; Wang et al , 2012; Zhuang et al , 2015) and in cashiers (Ndaw et al , 2016; Thayer et al , 2016). Because of the scientific debate around BPA and the lack of published data on BPA exposure among US manufacturing workers, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study in 2013–2014 to quantify urinary BPA in US workers engaged in making BPA or products made with BPA.…”

“…Higher BPA levels in women have been associated with poor ovarian response to IVF procedures [ 18 , 19 ], implantation failure [ 20 ], infertility [ 21 ], polycystic ovary syndrome [ 22 ], systemic hormonal imbalance [ 23 , 24 ], endometrial disorders [ 25 ], and miscarriage and premature delivery [ 26 , 27 ]. In men, higher BPA levels have been associated with sexual dysfunction [ 28 ], lower sperm quality measures [ 29 , 30 ], and hormonal imbalance [ 31 34 ]. Genital abnormalities and lower birth weight in male babies [ 35 , 36 ], premature puberty in female children [ 37 ], and hormonal imbalance in both male and female children [ 38 ] were also associated with higher BPA levels or exposure to BPA contaminated environment.…”
