Association of salivary steroid hormones and their ratios with time-domain heart rate variability indices in healthy individuals

Abstract: Backgound: Stress system consists of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the locus caeruleus/norepinephrine-autonomic nervous system (ANS). Traditionally, HPA axis activity is evaluated by measuring its end-product cortisol while the activity of ANS is assessed using heart rate variability (HRV) indices. Alterations in cortisol levels and HRV measures during laboratory-based stress tasks were extensively studied in previous research. However, scarce data exist on the associations of HRV measures … Show more

“…38 The importance of both relaxation and breathing characteristics was underscored in the MYgym results, which were the best results among the urban and indoor workouts. Mazgelyte et al, 39 provided the functional connection between the described psychophysical effects and our observed results, as they found signifycant associations between diminished parasympathetic vagal tone, evaluated by time domain heart rate variability measures, higher salivary cortisol and lower levels of both DHEA-S and the DHEA-S to cortisol ratio in healthy individuals.…”

“…The activity of the ANS and the HPA axis coordinated with each other in response to stress (Anderson et al, 2008;Marques et al, 2010;Mazgelytė et al, 2021). As a marker of sympathovagal balance, HRV refers to a sensitive indicator of sympathetic and vagal activity (Kayacan et al, 2021;Mazgelytė et al, 2021).…”

“…Psychological stress triggers a cascade of pathophysiological events mediated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis (Anderson et al, 2008;Marques et al, 2010;Mazgelytė et al, 2021). These two neural stress systems coordinate the responses of many other physiological systems to stressors, including the immune and cardiovascular systems, allowing the body to return to homeostasis (Marques et al, 2010).…”

“…However, the participants were a homogeneous group with respect to age and lifestyle since all were university students. Moreover, there are a number of other studies with cortisol investigations, comprising similar or even smaller number of participants but rendering useful results and information (18,(40)(41)(42)(43)(44).…”
