Association of preoperative magnetic resonance imaging findings with surgical features in Dachshunds with thoracolumbar intervertebral disk extrusion

Abstract: In the thoracolumbar vertebral column of Dachshunds with clinical signs of intervertebral disk disease, MRI is a valuable technique for determining location and craniocaudal length of EIDM. Compared with T1-weighted and STIR images, T2-weighted images appeared to be more accurate and precise and are potentially more reliable for determination of the length of EIDM in those dogs.

“…However, the accuracy of MRI for determination of a diagnosis of an extruded intervertebral disk is 100%. 24,25 Differential diagnoses for the dog included an inflammatory granuloma, hemorrhage, or an extradural lesion of neoplastic origin. These diagnoses were considered unlikely because of the MRI signal characteristics of the lesion in the initial and follow-up images.…”

“…4A). Lesions impinging on the subarachnoid space are readily detected; for example, T2W scans provide more accurate information about the severity and extent of extruded disc material than T1W or STIR images 9 . Differentiating extradural and extramedullary–intradural lesions may be difficult, although acquisition of T2W images in both dorsal and sagittal planes may show widening of the subarachnoid space with the latter.…”

“…Neste estudo os segmentos de coluna acometidos por discopatia foram, em geral, no terço final da coluna cervical e torácica, a lombar e o segmento inicial da sacral. Cães Dachshund com sinais clínicos de doença no disco intervertebral apresentaram alterações no segmento T12-13 sendo este o mais acometido 6/16 cães (37,5 %) (Naudé et al 2008). Em nossos estudos foram verificados 2/6 cães (33,3 %) para o mesmo segmento de coluna, nesta raça.…”
