Association of Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase with Nuclear Transcription Sites in Higher Plants

Abstract: The kinases responsible for phosphorylation of inositol-containing lipids are essential for many aspects of normal eukaryotic cell function. Genetic and biochemical studies have established that the phosphatidylinositol (PtdIns) 3-kinase encoded by the yeast VPS34 gene is essential for the efficient sorting and delivery of proteins to the vacuole; the kinase encoded by the human VPS34 homolog has been equally implicated in the control of intracellular vesicle traffic. The plant VPS34 homolog also is required f… Show more

“…TbVps34 may also act by a more indirect route. Several lines of evidence point to a role for Vps34-like enzymes in the nucleus, with suggested roles in transcription and telomere length regulation (3,63). Thus TbVps34 may have other functions in addition to its role in vesicular transport.…”

“…There are three types of PI3K in animal cells (Toker and Cantly 1997). In plants, only type III PI3K has been reported (Hong and Verma 1994;Welters et al 1994;Bunney et al 2000). It has been shown that NADPH oxidase is activated by binding phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate (PI3P), a product of PI3K, to the PX domain of p40 phox (Ellson et al 2001).…”

“…It is involved in plant growth and development, vesicle trafficking from Golgi to vacuoles and regulation of the transcriptional process (Welters et al 1994;Bunney et al 2000;Kim et al 2001). It has also been reported that extracellular Zn activates PI-3K pathway (Kim et al 2000;Eom et al 2001).…”

“…Of the different types of PI-3K reported in animals, only type III PI-3K, which makes PI3P from phosphoinositide, has been reported in plants (Bunney et al 2000). It is involved in plant growth and development, vesicle trafficking from Golgi to vacuoles and regulation of the transcriptional process (Welters et al 1994;Bunney et al 2000;Kim et al 2001).…”
