Association of Lipopolysaccharide-Binding Protein and Coronary Artery Disease in Men

Abstract: Lipopolysaccharide-binding protein might serve as a novel marker for CAD in men. The present results underlie the potential importance of innate immune mechanisms for CAD. Further studies are warranted to bolster the data and to identify pathogenetic links between innate immune system activation and atherosclerosis.

“…This threshold named 'metabolic endotoxemia' may trigger toll-like receptor 4-mediated inflammatory activation, eliciting a chronic low-grade proinflammatory and pro-oxidative stress status associated with obesity and many of its associated complications [36][37]. Along with the mounting evidence to indicate that gut microbiota is responsible for systemic inflammation, circulating LBP has been found to be increased in ASCVD [39]. In our study, we observed that patients with preexisting ASCVD have higher concentrations of serum LBP.…”

“…( 76 ). Several clinical studies have observed a correlation between plasma LBP and atherosclerosis, with the presumption that LBP is a nonspecifi c marker of chronic infl ammation similar to other acute phase proteins such as CRP ( 46,77 ). Unlike CRP however, which showed no effect on atherosclerosis progression in independent transgenic mouse models ( 78,80 ), we show that LBP possesses distinct atherogenic actions.…”

“…LBP co-purifies with high-density lipoprotein (HDL) particles and additional studies have shown that LBP can transfer LPS to lipoproteins, neutralizing LPS effects. 13 Serum LBP concentration was described as a marker of coronary artery disease 14,15 and has been recently found to be associated with obesity and related disorders in apparently healthy Chinese subjects. 16 We here confirm the previously reported association of circulating LBP with insulin resistance and obesity in a Caucasian population.…”
