Association of Life's Simple 7 with incident dementia and its modification by the apolipoprotein E genotype

Abstract: Introduction:There is limited and inconsistent reporting on the association between Life's Simple 7 (LS7) and dementia in the elderly population. Methods:Based on the Washington Heights-Inwood Columbia Aging Project (WHICAP), LS7 scores were estimated to assess cardiovascular health status. Associations between LS7 scores and incident dementia were investigated by Cox proportional hazards models. Results: Among 1987 subjects, 291 incident cases of dementia were identified over a median follow-up of 5.84 years. … Show more

“…Hypertension has been identified as a risk factor for VaD (Joas et al, 2012). Our findings are in line with previous work indicating that the management of hypertension is crucial to the prevention of VaD (Guo et al, 2021). We also determined that younger male MCI patients faced an elevated likelihood of developing dementia, which may be due to the correlation between male sex and VaD, particularly among younger elderly individuals (Liu et al, 1998).…”

“… 6 The associations of 7 individual components with cognitive outcomes have been widely studied, 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 and a few recent studies have also examined the associations between the adherence of LS7 and cognitive outcomes, and higher score of LS7 are associated with better cognitive outcomes in several domains. 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 However, most of these studies were based on individual cohorts with different characteristics, and it is desirable that the associations are examined in a sample representative of the US population.…”

“…The population in the current study was relatively younger with intact cognitive function, which could represent the preclinical stage of AD. The correlations between LS7 and dementia and AD risks were verified, and the underlying mechanisms of accumulation of neurodegenerative pathology and the reduction of clearance may be involved in multiple pathways, including vascular risks, inflammatory, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction [ 11 , 30 33 ].…”

“…However, research in Rotterdam displayed the protective effects on dementia among low and intermediate genetic risk populations [ 41 ]. Also, significant associations between LS7 scores and composite lifestyles with dementia were observed only among APOE ε4 allele non-carriers, yet not in the carriers [ 11 , 14 ]. The relationship between metabolic risk profile and cognitive performance was suggested stronger among APOE ε4 allele non-carriers [ 34 ].…”
