Association of Antibodies to Heat-Shock Protein-65 with Percutaneous Transluminal Coronary Angioplasty and Subsequent Restenosis

Abstract: SummaryHeat-shock protein (HSP)-65 of mycobacterial origin has been implicated in the mediation of atherosclerosis by immune mechanisms. Any role of HSP-65 in mediating restenosis is however not clear. We determined the anti-HSP-65 antibodies in 28 patients, 25 male and 3 female, aged 35 to 78 years, with coronary artery disease (CAD) and undergoing percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA). Of the 28 patients, 12 suffered restenosis five to seven months later. The serum levels of antibody were meas… Show more

“…after angioplasty have been documented in several studies (5,15,(22)(23)(24), but the results are inconsistent (2,(4)(5)(6)(7). Our study is the largest case control study so far on the relationship between anti-Hsp60 and risk of CHD, providing evidence that increasing anti-Hsp60 concentrations are associated with CHD risk in a doseresponsive manner.…”

“…We have previously shown an association of serum antihsp65 antibodies to carotid atherosclerosis, 13 and reports from several groups have demonstrated increased antibody titers in patients with arteriosclerosis or coronary heart diseases, 14,17 which declined after angioplasty or myocardial infarction 15,16 because of immune complex formation, with autologous hsp60 released as a consequence of tissue necrosis. 26a In the present follow-up study, we provide evidence of a sustained elevation of anti-hsp65 antibody titers in subjects with atherosclerosis and demonstrate a predictive value for the progression of atherosclerotic lesions with high risk of mortality.…”

“…Correlations have been reported between several of these factors and cardiovascular risk factors, such as LDL cholesterol and hypertension, and psychosocial measures, such as socioeconomic status and psychological stress (11)(12)(13). Furthermore, several of these factors have been associated with carotid disease and ischemic stroke (11,14,15 ), presence and severity of coronary atherosclerosis (16,17 ), and restenosis after percutaneous transluminal coronary angio- plasty (18 ). They have also been associated with aortic disease and peripheral vascular disease (19 -21 ).…”
