Association between Vitamin D Deficiency and Psoriasis: A Case-Control Study

Abstract: The immunomodulatory effect of vitamin D is well known, and some previous studies have found a potential association between vitamin D deficiency and psoriasis. If this is the case, correction of vitamin D levels could provide a simple, cost-effective treatment method for psoriasis patients. The aim of this case-control study was to confirm whether there was such an association. We also investigated several potential risk factors of psoriasis. We recruited 68 consecutive psoriasis outpatients at three hospital… Show more

“…Psoriasis appears to be influenced by genetic and immune-mediated pathological mechanisms. The pathogenesis of psoriasis is still not completely understood, but psoriasis is associated with excessive T-cell activity, as well as keratinocyte differentiation [3,4], and different pro-inflammatory mediators such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-17, and IL-23 [5]. The worldwide prevalence is approximately 1-3% [6].…”

“…1 In fact, psoriasis is now recognised as a systemic pathology that includes a variety of problems, such as psoriatic arthritis, obesity, and metabolic disorders, all of which enhance a patient's risk of cardiovascular disease. 2,3 The 50-79% of patients with skin psoriasis and up to 80% of those with psoriatic arthritis (Psoriatic arthritis) may experience nail problem. 1 Mukherjee D et al Int J Res Med Sci.…”

“…4 Further, among case-control studies published between 2019 and 2021, few of them showed significant association between 25(OH) D levels and psoriasis, [5][6][7][8][9] while other remaining studies did not show a significant association between level of 25(OH) D with psoriasis. [10][11][12][13][14] Hence in conclusion from the literature review of clinical studies available to date, the association between psoriasis and vitamin D is still controversial.…”
