Association Between Use of Traditional Chinese Medicine Herbal Therapy and Survival Outcomes in Patients With Stage II and III Colorectal Cancer: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study

Abstract: Longer duration of TCM herbal use is associated with improved survival outcomes in stage II and III colorectal cancer patients in China. More research is needed to evaluate the effects and underlying mechanisms of herbal medicine on colorectal cancer outcomes.

“…Multiple studies have demonstrated that conventional formulas could inhibit cancer drug resistance or metastasis via regulating T cell phenotype, macrophage polarization, chemokine expression and immune checkpoint [27,28]. Meta-analyses of clinical trials have also demonstrated that traditional medical practice could improve cancer patients' survival period and life quality, accompanied by normalization of tumor immune microenvironment [14,[29][30][31][32]. Meanwhile, a number of TCM formulas have been commercialized and prescribed to cancer patients with positive clinical efficacy, such as Huaier granule, PHY906 and Huachansu, which shows great effects on tumor microenvironment modulation including macrophage inhibition, T cell differentiation and cytokine secretion [30,33,34].…”

“…Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used in China, but there is a lack of systematic clinical trials to verify its efficacy (Zhao et al, 2018). Previous studies have shown that long-term use of traditional Chinese medicine can improve the survival rate of patients with stage II-III colorectal cancer after radiotherapy and chemotherapy (Xu et al, 2017), but the combination of traditional Chinese medicine and chemotherapy, targeted treatment for advanced colorectal cancer has not been reported. Our results show that TCM compound can improve PFS and quality of life of patients with chemotherapy combined with targeted therapy, and reduce the incidence of adverse reactions.…”

“…In CRC, TCM significantly improved disease-free survival in stage II and III CRC in a retrospective cohort study including 817 patients (Shi et al, 2017). In a multicenter prospective cohort study including 312 patients with stage II and III CRC, postoperative TCM treatment was associated with better disease-free survival and overall survival compared to those of the untreated group (Xu et al, 2017). Certain active ingredients in TCM herbs may have stronger activity in inhibiting cell proliferation and promoting cell apoptosis (Tan et al, 2011;Huang and Hu, 2018).…”

“…Postoperative treatments including chemotherapy and radiotherapy are important for longer patient survival. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has become an option for preventing CRC metastasis and enhancing the effects of chemotherapy (Shi et al, 2017;Xu et al, 2017;Xie et al, 2019). TCM is used as an alternative or supplementary treatment in the United States and Europe and has been widely used to treat various diseases in Asia, especially in China (Wang et al, 2014).…”
