Association between urinary tract infection and postmicturition wiping habit

Abstract: Urinary tract infections are common in pregnancy. In pregnancy urinary tract infections have an associated risk of premature labour. This study looks at the incidence of urinary tract infections and the method of perineal hygiene used after urination. Wiping back to front is associated with a greater risk of developing urinary tract infection than wiping front to back.

The fecal microbiota is a primary source of E. coli causing UTIs via the fecal–perineal–urethral route.…”

“…Many reports have demonstrated various factors, including sexual intercourse, the use of spermicides, decreases in estrogen, urinary tract confinement, diabetes, urinary incontinence, faecal incontinence, the use of intrauterine devices, neurogenic bladder and the presence of excessive residual urine, to be triggers of cystitis in females (Hooton et al, 1996;Foxman, 2002;Handley et al, 2002). Persad et al (2006) reported that the postmicturition wiping from BTF could be a risk factor for cystitis in pregnancy. On the other hand, Klatt et al (2010) reported that BTF wiping after toilet was not associated with recurrent bacterial vaginosis.…”
