Association Between Treatment Compliance and Different Types of Cardiovascular Complications in Arterial Hypertension Patients

Abstract: This cross-sectional analytical study was carried out at 23 Family Health Centers in Fortaleza-CE, Brazil. The objective was to verify the link between anti-hypertension treatment compliance and the types of cardiovascular complications present in hypertensive patients. The sample was composed of 182 hypertensive patients registered in the Sistema de Gestão Clínica de Hipertensão Arterial e Diabetes Mellitus da Atenção Básica who accepted to answer and fill in a structured form and an instrument to assess comp… Show more

“…As evidenced by the findings of this research, the higher attendance at consultations has a statistically significant relationship with better medication adherence, which reinforces the notion that accessibility and frequent use of health services impacts strongly on the health conditions of hypertensive patients with associated cardiovascular disease. In addition, other investigations corroborate the finding by pointing out an increase in therapeutic adherence of patients with hypertension after the occurrence of complications of the disease (22)(23) .…”

“…This has an impact on antihypertensive therapy adherence, since, as evidenced by our findings, there is a statistically significant relationship between greater attendance to consultations and better adherence to medication. Furthermore, this finding is proven by other studies, which demonstrate a greater therapeutic adherence of hypertensive patients after they go through disease complications (22)(23) .…”

“…Once this and/or other comorbidity is identified, health professionals should provide care that includes the different components for the diagnosis of the MS, concentrating effective intervention measures against the mismatch caused by the syndrome. 30 Likewise, measures to encourage the abandonment of cigarette and alcohol use should be implemented, since in addition to the known aggravations, these drugs also increase the chance of developing the MS, since they increase the concentration of abdominal fat, reducing the insulin sensitivity and raising glycemic levels, exemplified by the participants of this study, who, in turn, presented significant alterations in the metabolic variables investigated. 26 Finally, the real need to develop and institutionalize actions that promote the health of these patients deserves to be highlighted.…”

“…Research carried out in Ceará state with Primary Care users who are monitored by the Hiperdia program shows that even with the SAH diagnosis and treatment, only 25% of users maintain pressure levels in a desirable way. Further, the proportion of users with BP < 140x90 mmHg after starting treatment varied between 6% and 25%, making the low adherence to treatment from the lack of pressure control evident (30) . The older adults in the present study with better blood pressure, especially diastolic, had good adherence to treatment.…”
