Association Between the Awareness of Dyslipidemia and Health Behavior for Control of Lipid Levels Among Korean Adults with Dyslipidemia

Abstract: BackgroundDyslipidemia is a major risk factor contributing to cardiovascular disease and its prevalence is steadily rising. “…A mother’s perception of lipid levels could affect her children’s lipids through efforts related to lifestyle and diet changes 30. A recent Korean study highlighted education and counselling in order to change health behaviour in addition to awareness of dyslipidaemia 31. Our results from subgroup analyses support these previous studies and highlight the influence of the mother’s perception of dyslipidaemia and resultant lifestyle changes.…”

“…Many individuals are unaware that they have dyslipidemia. Although the awareness rate of dyslipidemia varies according to prior studies, one recent Korean study reported that only approximately 17% of adults with dyslipidemia over 20 years old were aware of their dyslipidemia status [33]. Effective medical therapy, such as administration of statin drugs, helps to prevent CVD [34,35].…”

“…Furthermore, participants taking medication for DM were more engaged in exercise in the fully adjusted model, whereas those who were taking medication for DLP did not engage in exercise compared with those who were not taking medication. These findings suggested that the intention of lifestyle modification may differ among patients with noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), such as DM, DLP, and HTN 26,27 . Since health education would be useful to encourage lifestyle modification, further understanding of the intention and readiness for exercise among patients with different NCDs is required to facilitate better health education in clinical settings 6,25 …”
