Association between Repeated Unpredictable Chronic Mild Stress (UCMS) Procedures with a High Fat Diet: A Model of Fluoxetine Resistance in Mice

Abstract: Major depressive disorder is a debilitating disease. Unfortunately, treatment with antidepressants (ADs) has limited therapeutic efficacy since resistance to AD is common. Research in this field is hampered by the lack of a reliable natural animal model of AD resistance. Depression resistance is related to various factors, including the attendance of cardiovascular risk factors and past depressive episodes. We aimed to design a rodent model of depression resistance to ADs, associating cardiovascular risk facto… Show more

“…CS and BW of the animals were recorded on each Monday before and during the experiments. The evaluation of the CS was carried out by assessment of eight different body parts: head (including eyes and nose); neck; dorsal coat;ventral coat; tail; forepaws; hind paws; and, genital region [16,18]. A score of "0" for a coat in a good state or a score of "1" for a dirty coat were given for each of these areas.…”

“…More recently, follow-up work has taken a proteomic approach in an attempt to find molecular differences in the ventral hippocampus between responders and non-responders (Bisgaard et al, 2007). Another study demonstrated that if animals are on a high fat diet during multiple UCMS procedures they become resistant to treatment with a SSRI (fluoxetine) (Isingrini et al, 2010).…”
