Association between Measures of Vertebral Endplate Morphology and Lumbar Intervertebral Disc Degeneration

Abstract: There is an association between vertebral endplate morphology and lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration. Vertebral endplates at the degenerated disc level become flat; the severity of this flattening is correlated with the degree of disc degeneration.

“…These medical imaging technologies play an important supporting role in the clinical diagnosis and treatments, which have been recognized worldwide [8]. However, at the same time, in the face of a large number of medical images, medical personnel need to manually observe and analyze the image data; not only the workload is significantly increased but also the diagnosis results are related to the personal experiences of doctors [9]. Which are often subjective and are likely to affect the diagnostic accuracy of diseases [10].…”

“…These studies emphasized the importance of ED and endplate morphology. 10 The classification of ED of the lumbar spine was defined several authors, 12,15,18 but there was no method to measure ED of the cervical spine. We revised the ED classification for the lumbar spine to the cervical spine.…”

“…[3][4][5] However, other authors point out that DD does not necessarily antecedent of facet degeneration. [6][7][8] In addition, in the study of lumbar intervertebral DD, a hypothesis about endplate degeneration (ED) driven DD was also presented, [9][10][11] Furthermore, the multifactorial analyzes of DD, Modic changes (Mcs), facet degeneration, ED, and pain are also recently evaluated. 12,13 However, this approach is still limited in cervical spine degeneration studies.…”

“…Therefore, the morphology of the endplate plays an important role in maintaining the above functions. In previous studies on the relationship between vertebral endplate morphology and lumbar disc degeneration, researchers found that the level of vertebral endplate attening was related to the severity of intervertebral disc degeneration [20]. Pappou et al analyzed the relationship between the morphology of the lumbar endplate and the degree of degeneration by MRI, and their research revealed that the shape of the endplate was related to disc degeneration and Modic changes [21].…”
