Association between Maximal Aerobic Capacity and Psychosocial Factors in Adults With Moderate-to-Severe Asthma

Abstract: Our results suggest an association between reduced exercise capacity, low HRQoL and increases in depressive symptoms in clinically stable asthmatic subjects. These results suggest the need to assess physical fitness and psychosocial distress during asthma treatment and the importance of a multidisciplinary approach.

“…Asthmatic exercisers have a lower bronchoconstriction, even though they were without a therapy to eliminate the hyperresponsiveness of the airways. Additionally, physical exercise improves aerobic capacity and the endurance of respiratory muscles, making asthma attacks less uncomfortable (2, 5). …”

“…However, no studies have examined the effect of emotional and affective factors on exertional dyspnoea during exercise. In a study of moderate-to-severe Brazilian asthma subjects by MENDES et al [63], lower aerobic capacity during CPET was associated with reduced health-related quality of life and depressive symptoms independent of body mass index, age and FEV1; however, they did not report any data with regard to dyspnoea during or after exercise.…”
