Association Between Lymph Node Ratio and Recurrence and Survival Outcomes in Patients With Oral Cavity Cancer

Abstract: IMPORTANCE Oral cavity squamous cell carcinoma (OCSCC) is associated with often-delayed clinical diagnosis, poor prognosis, and expensive therapeutic approaches. Prognostic accuracy is important in improving treatment outcomes of patients with this disease.OBJECTIVES To assess lymph node ratio (LNR) and other factors in estimating response to treatment and provide prognostic information helpful for clinical decision making.

“…Although surgery, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy could cure the majority of cases of early‐stage OSCC, the outcome of most patients with advanced‐stage OSCC has not improved during the last three decades. Cancer metastasis, neoplasm recurrence, and drug resistance are the foremost confounders accountable for the poor 5‐year survival rate that usually <50% . Therefore, as an alternative strategy for advanced stage OSCC treatment, cancer research target has been directed at interfering with key mediators of metastasis in the past few decades.…”

“…20 Secondly, the decreased lymphocyte count plays important roles in inflammatory reaction to tumor. 8 This can explain why increased NLR acts as an independent prognostic factor. There were evidence that showed an early diminution in NLR may be associated with more favorable outcomes and higher response rates, whereas an increase in NLR in the first weeks of treatment had the opposite effect.…”

Fourthly, nutrition parameters must be taken into consideration.…”
