Association between histocompatibility type and the ability to make anti‐Rh antibodies

Abstract: Association between histocompatibility type and the ability to make anti-Rh antibodiesThe HL-A types of Rh-negative women with and without anti-Rh antibodies were examined. In those who made Rh antibodies, there was an excess of HL-A1, and a deficiency of HL-A2 and W10, approaching the conventional level of significance. There was, however, a highly significant lack, in the antibody-making group, of subjects with only one antigen detected at the first (LA) locus. The capacity t o make anti-Rh antibodies and th… Show more

“…DR7 has previously been associated with nonresponsiveness to hepatitis vaccine (Walker et al 1981) and with failure to make white cell antibodies in multitransfused thalassemia major patients (Pollack et al 1982). Other studies have variably reported HLA associated responses to red cell immunization or lack of such responses (Brain & Hammond 1984, Raum et al 1984, Darke 1977.…”

“…A combined relative incidence analysis (Woolf 1955) performed on data from four independent studies (Brain & Hammond 1974, van Rood et al 1975, Murray et al 1976, Darke 1977) showed a small but consistent increase in the HLA-A3 antigen in females who responded to the Rhesus-D antigen during pregnancy (Darke 1977). However, no disturbance in HLA-A or B antigen frequencies in deliberately immunized male volunteers has been observed (Petranyi et al 1974, Dausset & Hors 1975, Darke 1977 To further investigate the possible relationship between the HLA system and immune responsiveness, HLA-DR and properdin factor B (Bf) typing has been performed on responders and non-responders to the D antigen.…”

“…In a 1974 study of previously pregnant White South African women, Brain and colleagues reported that nonresponders to D tended not to form anti-HLA antibodies, and women sensitized to D tended to be HLA sensitized as well. 33 All LAPS subjects were volunteer blood donors. Typically, individuals who test positive for non-ABO anti-RBC antibodies are excluded from donating blood.…”
