Association Between High Serum Matrix Metalloproteinase-9 and MMP-9 (-1562C>T) Polymorphism in Patients With ST-Elevation Acute Myocardial Infarction

Abstract: BackgroundMatrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-9 is excessively expressed in frail region of atherosclerotic plaque and released in circulation following plaque rupture. High MMP-9 level associated with severity of occluded thrombus and subsequent myocardial infarction. MMP-9 (-1562C>T) polymorphism associated with acute myocardial infarction, however conflicting data present regarding impact of MMP-9 (-1562C>T) polymorphism on circulating MMP-9 level in acute myocardial infarction with ST-elevation (STEMI), clinica… Show more

“…Few epidemiologic studies have investigated associations between MMP9 and MI onset. Setianto et al 35 demonstrated that the MMP9 C-1562T polymorphism is associated with high serum MMP9 levels in patients with segment elevation MI. Hansson et al 36 found that serum MMP9 and tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 levels were related to mortality risk of MI.…”

“…Second, 3 relevant articles were excluded because we could not obtain sufficient information to calculate the genotype distribution. 35,44,45 Third, sample sizes of several studies were too small, and studies in other languages were not retrieved. Fourth, additional analysis taking into account sex and information of MI should be conducted to give a new insight into the role of the studied polymorphism in the development of MI in various populations.…”

“…Coronary heart disease is one of the major causes of mortality in people older than 35 years that were usually caused by atherosclerotic process in coronary arteries, better known as coronary artery disease (CAD) [1]. Acute coronary syndrome (ACS) is symptomatic CAD and further classified into ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction and non-ST-elevation ACSs [2]. Progression of ACS is thought as a result from sudden luminal narrowing by thrombosis, mostly by plaque rupture [3].…”
