“…13,14 Compared with the classic examinations including biomicroscopy, OCT images have shown the detailed pathomorphology in MO associated with retinal vascular diseases including diabetic retinopathy (DR) and retinal vein occlusion (RVO), cystoid spaces, spongelike swelling, and serous retinal detachments (SRDs). 15,16 The integrity of outer layers of the fovea, the junction of the inner and outer segments, and the external limiting membrane also have been reported to be related to visual function in resolved MO associated with BRVO and DR. [17][18][19] However, it is unclear how an obstruction of a branch retinal vein results in a great diversity of morphology in the retinal vasculature and parenchyma. It also is not well understood how macular ischaemia affects the pathomorphology in the retinal parenchyma and vice versa.…”

“…Sakamoto et al suggested that the integrity of the foveal photoreceptor layer is associated with VA after resolution of DME through pars plana vitrectomy [17]. They showed that simple reduction in foveal thickness was insufficient to achieve good visual recovery, and that restoration of the structure of the photoreceptors to a more physiologic condition was required.…”

“…[7][8][9][10]20,21 Michalewski et al 6 sought correlations between macular morphology and visual acuity in patients with EMM using OCT. They reported that macular morphology and photoreceptor defects seemed to be prognostic factors in patients with EMM.…”
