Association between Emotional Exhaustion and Tobacco Consumption in Teachers

Abstract: Teachers have been reported as having high levels of emotional exhaustion (EE). It has also been observed that tobacco consumption (TC) is higher during stressful events. However, there is little evidence about the association between EE and TC among teachers. A total of n = 560 teachers took part in this study, where 71.79% (n = 402) were women. For data gathering, the EE dimension of the Maslach Inventory for teachers was used, along with a TC questionnaire and the sociodemographic data of the participants. … Show more

“…This is slightly controversial compared to previous results as it had been shown to have no or negative effect on the prevalence of the syndrome [ 36 , 37 ]. A recent study showed that emotional exhaustion, which is possibly the main component of burnout can be associated with increased rate of tobacco use, so it can be a form of coping with stress and people who are on the verge of burnout may resort to the habit quite often ([ 40 42 ], https://studenttheses.universiteitleiden.nl/access/item%3A2661447/view ). We speculate that the higher rate of smoking can be attributable to increased stress, but these workers have not yet reached total burnout but were on the way to this state.…”

“…We speculate that the higher rate of smoking can be attributable to increased stress, but these workers have not yet reached total burnout but were on the way to this state. Interstingly, only small, but significant association was found between in the case of alcohol consumption and burnout in a recent meta-analysis and the found effect could be considered as small based on their results ([ 40 ], https://studenttheses.universiteitleiden.nl/access/item%3A2661447/view ). So the association of burnout and tobacco comsumption (and alcohol comsumption) merits further investigation.…”

“…Portilla A et al in their study on 560 subjects reported no association between age and tobacco consumption. [ 34 ] Si Y et al reported a decrease in tobacco consumption with increasing age. [ 26 ] These findings differ from those of our study where we observed a statistically significant increase in the prevalence of tobacco consumption with increasing age.…”
