Association between Depression and Insomnia Subtypes: A Longitudinal Study on the Elderly in Japan

Abstract: The longitudinal study revealed a statistically significant relationship, controlling for other relevant factors, between DIS and the presence of depression three years later, but not between EMA or DMS and depression. Based on our findings, we recommend that the association between insomnia subtypes and depression be studied longitudinally in clinical settings.

“…Sleep disturbances are a hallmark of the depressive disorder, with approximately 80% of patients with depression complaining of a deterioration in the quantity and quality of sleep. 18 Lopes et al 36 also identified an association between depression and excessive daytime sleepiness, a manifestation of sleep dysfunction during wakefulness, and found that men with depression were more associated with this dysfunction.…”

“…34,35 The consequences of insomnia for mental health have still not been fully investigated, but it has been found that the condition can increase the risk of depression. 18 In a study of 196 subjects aged 62 to 65 Yokoyama et al 18 found an association between depression and sleep disturbance, and identified a bidirectional relationship between the two. Sleep disturbances are a hallmark of the depressive disorder, with approximately 80% of patients with depression complaining of a deterioration in the quantity and quality of sleep.…”

“…7 The interplay between these psychopathologies is not fully understood; however, their functional relationship has become a focus of recent investigation. 8,9 By using self-rating scales, epidemiological surveys have demonstrated the significant association between chronic insomnia and depression in young adults, as well as in elderly populations. 3,9 Insomnia is the major complaint among those patients with MDD, and about 40% to 80% of such patients complained of insomnia, or poor sleep quality.…”
