Association between Blood Level of Plasma Oxytocin and Novelty Seeking among Methadone-Maintained Heroin Users

Abstract: Background: Oxytocin interacts with the dopaminergic system, which plays a role in addiction behaviors. The association between oxytocin and addiction was confirmed in animal studies. Novelty seeking is one of the predictors and indicators of drug addiction. The aim of the present study was to probe the association between oxytocin and novelty seeking. Methods: The study was conducted in a methadone maintenance therapy clinic of a medical center in Taiwan; 77 patients with heroin dependency were enrolled. Plas… Show more

“…Animal studies have indicated that novelty-seeking tendency is related to addiction behaviors [33], and this phenomenon has also been confirmed in human studies [26, 34]. In our previous study, an association between oxytocin and novelty-seeking was identified [21]. We speculated that novelty-seeking and oxytocin might be 2 distinct factors that affect addiction; the former could be a stable temperament or trait, and the plasma level of oxytocin might vary due to physiological state changes.…”

“…Although it is as yet unclear whether oxytocin and dopamine have a direct association, accumulating evidence has suggested that oxytocin may have a positive effect on treatment for alcohol use disorders and other problematic substance abuse [16, 17]. In addition, there could exist an association between dopamine and novelty-seeking tendency [18], which could be an important issue related to addiction and oxytocin [19-21]. …”

“…The administration of carbetocin, an oxytocin receptor agonist, prevents reinstatement of conditioned reinforcing effects of morphine ( 16 ) and alcohol ( 14 ). Further evidence supporting the role of oxytocin in the involvement of addiction is that a negative association of plasma oxytocin levels with novelty-seeking, one of the indicators of addiction, was observed in heroin users ( 17 ).…”

“…NS has been linked to several neuropsychiatric disorders, including drug addiction (Bardo et al, 1996 ; Lin et al, 2015 ; Vanhille et al, 2015 ), alcohol and tobacco abuse (Palmer et al, 2013 ), pathological gambling (Kim and Grant, 2001 ), eating disorders (Krug et al, 2009 ), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) (Jakšić et al, 2012 ), and depression (Duclot and Kabbaj, 2013 ), yet the association with GM volume of the pulvinar remains to be investigated.…”
