The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of malocclusion and associations with socioeconomic indicators among preschoolers. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 732 children 3 to 5 years of age in the city of Campina Grande, Brazil. Three dentists underwent a calibration exercise (K = 0.85-0.90) and diagnosed malocclusion based on the criteria proposed by Foster & Hamilton and Grabowski et al. Parents/guardians answered a questionnaire addressing sociodemographic aspects. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics and bivariate Poisson regression (PR; α = 5%). The prevalence of malocclusion was 62.4%. The most frequent types were increased overjet (42.6%), anterior open bite (21%) and deep overbite (19.3%). An association was found between malocclusion and age: the prevalence of malocclusion was greater among younger children, with the highest prevalence among 3-year-olds (PR = 1.116; 95%CI = 1.049-1.187). The prevalence of malocclusion was high. Mother's schooling and household income were not associated with malocclusion. Socioeconomic factors were also not associated with the occurrence of malocclusion.

ÖZAllerjik rinit (AR) tüm yaş gruplarında görülen en sık ve kronik hastalıklardan biridir. Allerjik rinit IgE-aracılı nazal havayolunun allerjik enflamasyounu olup hapşırık, gözde kaşıntı-sulanma, burun mukozasının şişlik ve enflamasyonu ile kendini gösterir. Küresel sağlık problemi ve çocukluktan erişkinliğe kadar birçok kişiyi etkileyen ağır bir hastalıktır. Dünyada çocukluk çağı AR prevalansı %0.8 -45 arasında değişmektedir. Türkiye' de değişik bölgelerde sıklığı %2.9-44 olarak bildirilmektedir. Derlememizin amacı AR teşhis ve tedavisinde güncel tedavi ve teşhis yöntemlerini anlatmaktır. Hastalığın astım üzerine ve hastanın hayatına etkisinden dolayı AR en güvenilir ve etkin tedavi yöntemleriyle tedavi edilmelidir. İkinci kuşak antihistaminikler ve intranazal steroidler tedavinin temel taşlardır. Fakat mevcut ilaçların yeni formülasyonları (rupatadin oral solusyonu, hızlı çözünen ebastin tablet ve intranazal flutikazon propionat ve azelastin hidroklorit kombinasyonu vb.), yeni keşfedilmiş moleküller (siklesonid, bilastin, roflumilast vb.), immünolojik hedefi olan tedaviler (omalizumab gibi) ve klasik olmayan tedaviler (homeopatik yöntemler gibi) AR tedavisinde yeni ufukları temsil etmektedir. Allerjik rinitin doğru teşhis edilmesi tedavi başarısında esastır. Teşhiste ümit verici gelişmeler özgün risk molekülünü tanıyan rekombinant allerjenleri kullanan teşhis yöntemlerinden beklenmektedir. Hastaların duyarlı olduğu kişisel molekülleri tanımlayan pür doğal ve rekombinan allerjenler moleküler ya da belirlenmiş komponentin teşhis yöntemiyle saptanabilir. Böylece, belirlenmiş komponente dayalı teşhis yöntemi provokasyon testine olan ihtiyacı azaltabilir ve allerjen immünoterapisinin özgünlüğünü artırabilir. Yine teşhiste, nazal nitrik oksit (nNO) düzeyini ölçmekte günümüzde değişik yöntemler vardır. Azalmış nNO, kistik fibroz için tipik olmakla beraber, primer silyer diskinezide olduğu kadar düşük değildir. nNO'nun AR gibi üst solunum yolu hastalıklarında klinikte kullanımı yaygınlaşmamıştır. It is an IgE-mediated allergic inflammation of the nasal airways and is characterized by sneezing, swelling and inflammation of the nasal mucosa as well as itchy and watery eyes. It is a global health problem and a burdensome disorder affecting many people from childhood to adulthood. The prevalence of childhood AR shows wide variation throughout the world, ranging from 0.8 to 45%. The prevalence rates for different regions of Turkey ranges from 2.9 to 44%. The aim of the present review is to provide an update on AR treatment and diagnosis. Because of its burden on patient's lives and its impact on asthma, AR should be taken care of properly with effective and safe treatments. Bottle feeding, increased overjet and Class 2 primary canine relationship: is there any association?

The aim of this study was to investigate the association between bottle feeding and prevalence rates of increased overjet and Class 2 primary canine relationship. The sample consisted of 911 children (461 boys, 450 girls) aged 3 (13.9%), 4 (40.8%), 5 (34%) and 6 (11.3%) years, with complete primary dentition. Information about nutritive and nonnutritive (pacifier and/or digit) sucking habits was collected through questionnaires. Three calibrated dentists (κ: 0.9-1.0 and Rs > 0.90) performed the clinical assessments. The children were divided into four groups: G1 -not bottle-fed; G2 -exclusively bottle-fed; G3 -breast-and bottle-fed, bottle feeding ceased before 3 years of age; and G4 -breastand bottle-fed, bottle feeding ceased between 3 and 4 years of age. Associations between nutritive and nonnutritive sucking behaviors and the malocclusions studied were analyzed by multiple binary logistic regression (α = 0.05). The frequencies of increased overjet were: 25.3% (G1), 38.8% (G2), 39.2% (G3) and 47.8% (G4). The percentages of Class 2 canine relationship were: 27.9% (G1), 48.8% (G2), 43.4% (G3) and 43% (G4). No significant effect of bottle feeding was found. The chances of diagnosing increased overjet (O.R. = 4.42, p < 0.001) and Class 2 canine relationship (O.R. = 4.02, p < 0.001) were greater for children with pacifier and/or digit-sucking habits, compared to those without a history of nonnutritive sucking behavior. It may be suggested that bottle feeding alone is not directly associated with higher prevalence rates of increased overjet and Class 2 canine relationship in the primary dentition.

Abstract: Allergic rhinitis alone or together with non-nutritive sucking habits is related to anterior open bite. Non-nutritive sucking habits together with allergic rhinitis seem to be the most important factor for development of posterior open bite in children under the age of 5 years.
