Association between algal productivity and phycosphere composition in an outdoor Chlorella sorokiniana reactor based on multiple longitudinal analyses

Abstract: Microalgae as a biofuel source are of great interest. Bacterial phycosphere inhabitants of algal cultures are hypothesized to contribute to productivity. In this study, the bacterial composition of the Chlorella sorokiniana phycosphere was determined over several production cycles in different growing seasons by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and identification. The diversity of the phycosphere increased with time during each individual reactor run, based on Faith's phylogenetic diversity metric versus days post-ino… Show more

“…The members of this family are highly versatile, interacting with animals, humans, plants and fungi ( Bontemps et al, 2010 ; Hoffman and Arnold, 2010 ). They have been associated with micro -and macro-algae bacterial communities ( Hurtado-McCormick et al, 2019 ; Steichen et al, 2020 ; Qu et al, 2021 ; Yu et al, 2022 ). These bacteria can fix N2 providing nutrients for the algae host ( Bontemps et al, 2010 ; Gyaneshwar et al, 2011 ).…”

“…Besides, bacteria that are used for bioremediation processes include members of the genera Pseudomonas , Sphingomonas , Chryseobacterium , as well as Flavobacterium [ 51 ]. Most of these bacteria were also detected as main representatives of microbial communities in other algae–bacteria systems that grew in other wastewater systems [ 52 ] and freshwater reactors [ 53 ]. Interestingly, representatives of the orders Rhizobiales , Betaproteobacteriales , and Chitinophagales correlated with biomass productivity of C. sorokiniana strain DOE1412 during outdoor cultivation [ 53 ].…”

“…For instance, bacterial sporulation, such as that reported for species of the order Bacillales , increases the level of dye uptake, resulting in higher emission on the respective channel ( Zhang et al, 2020 ). Members affiliated with the order of Bacillales were also reported for microalgal cultures ( Steichen et al, 2020 ). To study those interactions, fluorescence-activated cell sorting would allow separating the different prokaryotic populations of interest.…”
