Association Between Age and Obesity Over Time

Abstract: BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:A decline in the prevalence of obesity among 2-to 5-year-olds in the United States was recently reported. This decline may be due to changes in the population composition of children over time or may be a consequence of changes in how strongly individual-or family-level factors are linked to childhood obesity. We applied regression decomposition techniques to identify the sources of the decline.

“…(34) The second study examined the effect of household income on obesity among preschool-aged children and found that while the overall effect on obesity did not change between 2003-04 and 2011-12, it did weaken among boys. (35) The difference in findings between our study and these two could be due to the different study samples. Both of these studies examined a nationally representative sample using NHANES data while our sample was of children living in low-income households.…”

“…(30-33) However, two recent studies found that disparities in childhood obesity by household income have not changed. (34,35) Despite using multiple disparity indices, Rossen and Schoendorf (2012) did not find that income disparities in obesity among children aged 2-18 years changed from 2001 to 2010. “…With an increase in income and quality of life, the rate of obesity in the middle-aged population is higher than that in the elderly population (age > 65 years) 23 . Although the obese patients are young, they have multiple the obesity-related comorbidities such as metabolic syndrome and CAD 2 .…”

“…Globally, 22 million children below 5 years old are overweight (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2006) and in the United States, about 17% (12.7 million) of children and adolescents between 2 and 19 years of age are currently (or have been) overweight or obese (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2014). Although some studies have reported a decline or leveling off of the prevalence of childhood obesity in the United States in recent years (Kranjac & Wagmiller, 2016;Skinner, Perrin, & Skelton, 2016), a recent study using nationally representative data concluded that there is no evidence for declines from 1999 to 2014 in the prevalence of obesity among children and adolescents between 2 and 19 years (Skinner et al, 2016).…”
