Assistive Technologies in Dementia Care: An Updated Analysis of the Literature

Abstract: Objectives: Technology can assist and support both people with dementia (PWD) and caregivers. Recently, technology has begun to embed remote components. Timely with respect to the pandemic, the present work reviews the most recent literature on technology in dementia contexts together with the newest studies about technological support published until October 2020. The final aim is to provide a synthesis of the timeliest evidence upon which clinical and non-clinical decision-makers can rely to make choices abo… Show more

“…In this context, increasing attention has been paid to those alternative measures capable of mitigating the psychosocial implications of the pandemic. Among them, digital technology may compensate for the lack of face‐to‐face care provision, thus allowing the continuity of care and social connectedness, while decreasing exposure to individual risk and the pressure on health and care systems (Goodman‐Casanova et al., 2020 ; Pappadà et al., 2021 ).…”

“…The main purpose of all these initiatives is to train more qualified teachers who will meet the needs of the country (El Hassouny et al, 2021). Students who are open to innovation, who are in constant cooperation and learning with their peers, who are aware of legal, ethical and social issues, as well as field and method knowledge, play a more active role in the process of integrating current technologies into teaching environments and become more successful (Pappadà, et al, 2021). From this point of view, the effect of teachers' technology use competencies in education on efficient learning processes and efficient use of technology is revealed.…”

“…Similar intermediate results emerge from four RCTs on cognitive training 9 , since half of the studies did not produce significant outcomes; only one study reported benefits on episodic memory and abstract reasoning, while the remaining study highlighted that computer-based cognitive interventions can slow down cognitive decline. Finally, a recent systematic review 10 highlights that several factors may account for the discrepancies reported across the studies carried on by computer-aided programs, i.e., the type and size of populations, the etiology of cognitive impairment etc. In particular, the Authors point to the different levels of cognitive impairment, suggesting that different stages of the dementia pathway are associated with preferred stimulation activities.…”
