OBJECTIVE:The objective of this study was to evaluate whether adolescent pregnancy is a risk factor for low birth weight (LBW) babies. METHODS:This was a cross-sectional study of mothers and their newborns from a birth cohort in Aracaju, Northeastern Brazil. Data were collected consecutively from March to July 2005. Information collected included socioeconomic, biological and reproductive aspects of the mothers, using a standardized questionnaire. The impact of early pregnancy on birth weight was evaluated by multiple logistic regression. RESULTS:We studied 4,746 pairs of mothers and their babies. Of these, 20.6% were adolescents (< 20 years of age). Adolescent mothers had worse socioeconomic and reproductive conditions and perinatal outcomes when compared to other age groups. Having no prenatal care and smoking during pregnancy were the risk factors associated with low birth weight. Adolescent pregnancy, when linked to marital status "without partner", was associated with an increased proportion of low birth weight babies. CONCLUSIONS:Adolescence was a risk factor for LBW only for mothers without partners. Smoking during pregnancy and lack of prenatal care were considered to be independent risk factors for LBW.

Objective: To investigate whether domestic violence during pregnancy is associated with unfavorable infant health outcomes, measured by low birth weight or prematurity. Methods:This was a prospective cohort study enrolling pregnant women whose prenatal care was provided by 10 basic health units in the city of Campinas, SP, Brazil, between 2004 and. A structured questionnaire was employed that had previously been validated for use in Brazil. Each mother attended a minimum of two and a maximum of three interviews during the prenatal and postnatal periods. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Student's t test was used to compare means for birth weight and gestational age between mothers who had suffered domestic violence during the current pregnancy and those who had not. Logistic regression analysis was employed to identify factors associated with low birth weight or prematurity.Results: During the prenatal and postnatal periods, 89.1% (n = 1,229) of the pregnant women were followed up, 10.9% being lost to follow-up, basically due to changes of address. Mean birth weight was 3,233 g; mean gestational age was 38.56 weeks. A total of 13.8% of the infants had low birth weight or were premature. Conditions associated with risk of low birth weight or prematurity were: mothers who had previously given birth prematurely (p < 0.005), who smoked (p < 0.001), who delivered by caesarian (p < 0.001) and whose partners had a low educational level (p < 0.008). O teste do reflexo vermelho é parte importante do exame ocular do recém-nascido. Buscou-se investigá-lo em recém-nascidos prematuros (RNPT) e sua relação com fatores da história neonatal. Estudo descritivo, exploratório, quantitativo, realizado numa maternidade pública, em Fortaleza-CE, em março, abril e maio de 2004, com 114 RNPTs. Para o registro dos dados, utilizou-se um formulário próprio e para a realização do exame, um oftal-moscópio direto. Considerou-se pertinente os seguintes achados da história neonatal: 68% dos RNPTs obtiveram Apgar inferior a sete no primeiro minuto; 112 utilizaram oxigenoterapia e 68, fototerapia. Quanto ao reflexo vermelho, 13 (11%) apresentaram alteração, com associação estatística significativa entre este e o Apgar no primeiro minuto de vida (p= 0,041). Os achados preocuparam, pois, dez dos 13 RNPTs, com alteração no reflexo vermelho, tinham retinopatia da prematuridade.
