Assessment the long-term effects of septoplasty surgery on olfactory function

Abstract: Although nasal surgery has the potential to affect the smell function negatively, it was found that olfactory function was not affected after the surgery during a considerably long follow-up period. Moreover, an improvement in smell function was detected at post-operative 6th month and 1st year.

“…Previous reports demonstrated similar results. 1,11,[13][14][15]46,53 Postoperatively, olfaction-associated QoL did not differ significantly between the three groups. Olfaction-related QoL was improved for both normosmic patients and those with olfactory dysfunction.…”

“…[7][8][9][10] To date, there are a few studies evaluating the effects of septal surgery on olfactory function. 1,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18] However, the impact of olfactory impairment due to septal deviation on the nasal-symptom related and general QoL of the patients has not been adequately addressed in the literature. In addition, although there are studies investigating predictive factors for QoL outcomes after septoplasty, [19][20][21][22][23][24][25] there is no data available to the relevance of the olfactory function specifically to patients' psychological status (anxiety and depression symptoms) and its effect on their satisfaction with the surgical procedure and postoperative QoL recovery.…”

“…Kilicaslan, et al [28] investigated the long term effects of septorhinoplasty on smell perception. They reported that all patients regained normal olfactory function after 12 months from the procedure [28]. Our study showed that patients regain their normal olfactory function after 3 months.…”

“…Clearly, nasal obstruction is frequently associated with OD because it results in a reduction of the number of odourants that enter the nose during breathing 17 38 . Only Fu et al 25 reported a relationship between nasal structure and olfactory function in patients with obstructive sleep apnoea.…”
