Assessment of Various Factors for Feasibility of Fixed Cantilever Bridge: A Review Study

Abstract: Cantilever fixed partial dentures are defined as having one or more abutments at one end of the prosthesis while the other end is unsupported. Much controversy without documentary evidence has surrounded this prosthesis. Despite negative arguments, the cantilever prosthesis has been used extensively by the clinicians. If used nonjudiciously without following proper guidelines these might lead to some complications. Although complications may be an indication that clinical failure has occurred, this is not typi… Show more

“…The implant-retained prosthesis are particularly beneficial for sites with unfavorable anatomic structures such as patients with excessive ridge bone resorption, proximity of the maxillary-sinus floor, or inferior-alveolar-nerves [ 29 , 30 ]. Nevertheless, the demand for CFPDs has increased due to the benefits including comfort, cost effectiveness and acceptance by the patients [ 31 , 32 ]. The advent of metal free CAD/CAM fabricated, tooth color, implant-supported cantilever zirconia frameworks (ISCZFs), has led to their use in the distal extension free end saddle areas [ 33 ].…”

“…The areas of various teeth are reported by Marcum. 13,14,15,17,10 Root Surface Area (Mm2) Newman and Ericsson however cast a doubt on the validity of Ante's Law by demonstrating that teeth with considerably reduced bone support can be successfully used as FPD abutments. The majority of treatments presented by these authors had an abutment root surface area less than half that of replaced teeth and there was no loss of attachment after 8-10 years.…”

“…Despite the importance gained by single retainer bonded bridges using the lithiuim dissilicates in terms of survival rate reported to 100% after 6 years 6 , as it avoids the debonding, Cantilever bridge requires favorable root length, shape and crown length 13 and is not required when splinting is indicated to stabilize post orthodontic treatment 6 .…”
