The safety of unsignalized intersections is evaluated by correlating the number of crashes with traffic volume and intersection geometry. However, crash-based safety assessment has known drawbacks related to data quality and coverage. Further, the crash-based safety analysis does not account that not all vehicles interact unsafely. Therefore, the present study develops crossing conflict-based safety performance functions (C-SPFs) for eight urban unsignalized T-intersections with varying intersection geometry. Initially, the crossing conflicts were analyzed using post encroachment time (PET); based on that, they are bifurcated into critical and noncritical conflicts. The C-SPFs were modeled as a function of traffic volume and intersection geometry using the generalized estimating equations with the Tweedie distribution (GEE_TD) regression approach. The results revealed the time of the day, intersection geometry, vehicular composition, and traffic volume of both offending and conflicting approaches as significant variables influencing the number of critical and noncritical crossing conflicts. Further, to check the predictive power of the GEE_TD model, the model errors are compared with those obtained using the negative binomial (NB) model. The result revealed that for both critical and noncritical conflicts, the GEE_TD model has better predictivity (lesser error) than the NB model.

<p>Depok City has traffic movement characteristics that are no different from other cities. Traffic movements in Depok City are quite busy and even tend to be congested at certain hours, such as when people go to work and return from work as happened on Arif Rahman Hakim Road which is a 4/2D road type (4 lanes 2 divided directions) which often experiences traffic jams. Efforts to overcome traffic jams are by implementing a system change from 4/2 to 2/1 (two lanes one way) which is expected to improve traffic performance. Observing this phenomenon, this study intends to determine the effect of implementing a one-way system on traffic performance. The findings in the field show that the application of a one-way system can improve traffic performance with an increase in the level of road service in one lane. The results of multiple regression analysis using vehicle situation, side barriers, and road situations simultaneously have a significant effect on traffic performance with an effect value of 10.3%.</p>

“Everything Somewhere” or “Something Everywhere”: Examining the Implications of Automated Vehicles’ Deployment Strategies

“Everything somewhere” or “something everywhere” is the classic dilemma concerning the development and implementation of the future generation of vehicles, i.e., automated vehicles (AVs). Both strategies include diverse policy options that could significantly impact road networks’ planning, design, operation, and utilization. Until now, no significant research has been conducted concerning their implications. In this paper, we aim to examine how ready the current physical infrastructure is by identifying the requirements of each strategy and then applying them in a common type of intersection. The study’s findings demonstrate that AVs’ performance can be affected by policy implementation decisions and adds further weight to the argument of AVs separation or no-separation from no-AVs traffic. Furthermore, the insignificant improvements in traffic performance imply the low readiness of the current road networks in urban areas to accommodate the new technology. This study contributes to determining that research on the readiness of the road infrastructure and the deployment of AVs in urban areas is inevitable. It also identifies that roads’ geometric design can dramatically affect AVs’ operation and the difficulties of implementing dedicated lanes in urban areas due to space availability.
