Assessment of the quality of immunization data produced by the national individual registration system in Uruguay, 2006

Abstract: Uruguay's NIP registration system produces remarkably reliable information, ensuring valid measurement of immunization coverage. In addition, by allowing for monitoring of each child's current vaccination status, it facilitates management of interventions designed to reduce vaccination default and thus helps achieve the country's high level of coverage.

“…Sound M&E systems are more important than ever because of resource constraints that necessitate evidence-based decision-making in order to target limited resources as efficiently as possible [17], performance-based funding mechanisms implemented by some major funders [30], and the emphasis on monitoring Millennium Development Goals [31]. While achieving data quality has been shown to be a challenge, even in non-resource limited settings [32,33], reports from countries such as Uruguay suggest that high data quality can be achieved in resource-constrained environments [34]. The timely availability of quality data is crucial for addressing health challenges and improving the quality of care throughout the health system.…”

“…Electronic immunization registries aim to document all vaccinations of each individual in each birth cohort [10],[11]. Denominators may derive from the same registry [11] or from a separate vital statistics system. When well implemented, electronic immunization registries can provide data for coverage measurement and for program management activities such as monitoring vaccine supply and requisitions and sending vaccination reminders.…”

“…It was performed while the NIP was in progress, so it provided data on the vaccination status of in-patients with consolidated pneumonia. Also, it is worth mentioning that the NIP keeps individual immunization records of all vaccinated children born in the country [3]. Thus, with the information available on the vaccination histories, this study aims to estimate the effects of PCV7 and PCV13 vaccine different number of doses on consolidated pneumonia in hospitalized children, considering 2008 and 2010 birth cohorts.…”
